i bought a used 2005 impala back in 2010. after i put 3k miles on it, the transmission wouldn't shift into 2nd gear. i changed the fluid & filter. it still wouldn't shift when i started out. instead of shifting into 2nd gear, it acted like it shifted into neutral. i would pull over, put it in neutral and gun the gas. put it back in drive and it would shift fine for the rest of the day. until the next day. come to find out the shift solenoids have small screens on the bottom that clog up and need cleaned off and they will shift properly after that. unfortunately you have to remove all of the suspension on the drivers wheel, lower the enginge & trans down 6 inches to get the side cover off to get to those switches. if gm would have used a second plate, just to expose the row of switches, you wouldn't have to unassemble the suspension and remove the half shaft to get to those switches. mine is a 2005. as of this date, 11/2020 they still have not made that change. after a car get 15 or 20 yrs old, most of the time the car is not worth putting $2500.00 in a transmission repair or replacement. i guess generous motors is also generous with your wallet also when it comes to repairs.
