This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.

There is a clicking sound coming from the steering column when turning...started after about 25,000 miles......it always occurs, everytime, and is very annoying.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. While driving approximately 8 mph, the contact heard a loud knocking noise coming from the steering column. She also noticed that the ABS and traction warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the ABS and steering column. Two weeks later, while driving 60 mph, the contact felt excessive vibration coming from the steering column. She filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 29,901 and current mileage was 32,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. When driving over speed bumps at various speeds, the contact heard a loud vibration and clucking noise in the steering column. She took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the outer hubs, tie rods, and intermediate shafts. However, the noise and vibrations still occur when driving over variations in the road. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 53,592 and current mileage was 74,472.
-the contact complained about the steering column coupler. GMC has known for years that this part was poorly designed, but failed to cover maintenance/replacement on it. The solution was to charge $165 + to grease the coupler at the contact''s expense. GM C was fully aware of a problem, and did not bring it to the contact's attention, and then charged the contact to fix it temporarily.
When turning left or right there is a clicking sound coming from the turn in the steering. During the turn it feels as though there is a break in the steering line. It seems as if it were a chain I would say its missing about 4 links. I took it in for this problem about 6 months ago and it was resolved for a while. I was told the steering column needed tightening. Here it is doing the same thing for the last 2 months. Now I notice the braking is not stopping in the manner it should. I have nearly rearended a few people in the last 2 months or continued just past the stop line at an intersection.
