Problem started in 2014 all of a sudden I noticed a whining noise which usually got worse when I was driving to work on the highway going about 65-70mph. It seemed like whenever it got into the higher gear the whining noise was quite loud and is always present while on the highway. At first I was afraid a transmission failure was coming very soon, so I called in to work a few times and played it safe but I decided to keep driving it and it continued to work. I was watching videos of police cars and noticed a 2000 impala police model in New York was making the exact same sounds and also saw other impalas in my city making the same sound too so it seems like a pretty common issue.

It just recently started showing signs of a more serious transmission issue which is why I'm here.

Impala LS 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,000 miles

from the best I can find out. it is probably the final drive of the transmission. It makes a high pitched whinning noise when put into gear. It gets louder when accelerating and under load, like going up hills. chevy and gm transmission problems are common and legendary by now. total garbage. I have a ford that after 215,000 has NEVER had a transmission problem. Unbelievable crap that chevy/gm passes off on consumers.

So the soulution is a proffesional is going to have to drop the transmission and either rebuild or might cost the same to just get a new one.....but why replace crap with factory crap? Will cost as much as the car would sell for.

Impala 3.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles

My Impala develops a definite whine in the transmission at highway speeds when you have driven about 50 miles and the transmission has had a chance to warm up to operating temperature. It get louder under a load such as going up a hill and gets quieter when coasting such as going down a hill. Seems to be less noticeable when in cruise control.

It is really loud when going the posted speed limit of 70 mph. Also seems to shift late when it is warmed up and whining.

Impala LS 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission

I'm not sure if the whirring noise comes from the tranny or the engine. It has gotten progressively worse over the years.

Also, it feels like you get kicked from under your seat when the transmission shifts.

Impala LS

  • 5,000 miles

the transmission has made a whining sound from 5000 miles when i got it. it now has 235,000 milles on it and still makes the same noise however isnt louder and it is still the same transmission. it is just one of those perfectly normal PISS OFF THE CUSTOMER type of thing.
