Driver's side door handle just brakes off. I feel this is a safety issue as you can become trapped in your car. The only way to open the door when this happened is to roll down window and put your arm out to open from the outside or have someone else open for you. For instance, if you were in an accident, car caught on fire, stalled on railroad tracks, or carjacked you are a prisoner in the car. The door handles are made of plastic and is a very expensive repair., mine was $200. If it had not been a safety concern, I would not have repaired it. If you research the internet it is very common problem. Please research.

The inside door handle broke off for the 2nd time in less than a year, I think this is the maker fault and the customer shouldn't be held responsible for this.

The HHR inside door handle broke off while opening door.had this happened under other conditions it could have resulted in a tragedy. Looking this up on the internet breaking inside door handles appears to be a common problem for the HHR.handles are made of light plastic.
Door handles are junk. Driver side broke at 58K. Switched with rear driver. At 74K that one broke. 75K passenger side broke. Handles are brittle. I have never encounter such a problem with any other car. It is an "american" car and people expect a certain standard so I am really disappointed.
In occurence to the first incident the passenger inside handle broke first, thinking that it may have a wear, but on 06/15/2013 the driver inside handle was opened at a normal and it broke. Now the front doors of my car does not have handles. The drop box are not allowing me to be more accurate on the make, model and year of my vehicle and also cannot put the appropriate defective parts.
Was at dollar store and tried to open the door as normal and the door handle broke off the only way I could get out was to roll down the window and open it from the outside this has to be some kind of defect I've never owned a car where this has happened from the what I have seen on the internet this seems like a very common thing with the HHR design.
I was returning home and parked the car to get out and the door handle broke off in my hand. I have to open the window to exit my vehicle. The rear door also sticks at times from the outside causing me and my wife to be unable to get out daughter out of the car.
While trying to open the drivers door the handle broke off. Handle was made of plastic. This would be a problem if involved in fiery crash and you could not get out of car.
Upon opening driver's door, handle snapped off in my hand. Two days later, the same thing happened to passenger door. This makes it impossible to open doors without window being down.
My 2010 HHR : the drivers side interior door handle snapped off and have to put down the window to exit the car. When this happened there was no excessive pressure used to open the door. Dissatisfied that it is composed of a soft plastic material. The cost to replace the handle requires an new door panel and 2+ hours of labor for a total of over $500.
