Last March 2014 I had my car recalled for the ignition switch. This February 2015 I went to get a key made. First trip got a key but told it would not work. Next day after two hours the key would not work. The safety mechanism has only 10 programmable spots and mine is full. So I can no longer get any keys made.
Prior to the recall I had four workable keys. Luckily one was misplace because I discarded the other three as instructed by the dealership. The misplaced pre-recall key still works and is one of the two keys I currently have. Still unclear why I had to discard them unless the ignition switch recall a bit of a scam. So due to the recall six of the slots have been filled an I have two working keys which makes me uncomfortable, because I like a friend to a have key in case of emergencies.
I have complained to the dealer, GM and Chevrolet customer service. The dealer is going to split the cost on replacing the mechanism, a $400 repair. GM is taking credit for the dealer's service, and Chevy referred me back to dealer's customer service. It is a big loop and I am having to pay $200 for a key because of the recall. It does not matter if it is a dealer key, no keys can be programmed without this repair. They have tried to clear the program without success.
So four trips to the dealer and approximately 8 hours of my time to get a key which the recall caused. Plus the reduced price of $200. So beware and keep your keys, it might cost you $400, if you do, complain effectively.
