This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Express 3500 van. The hinge on the double doors on the side froze, they will not open anymore. Previously, they where hard to open, and now they are cracking. The dealership said this was bad design. Also, dealership told her that there was back order on the hinges. Obviously a lot of people were having similar problems. The consumer ran a day care center. It was difficult for children to go from the front of the van to the back. In an emergency it would be impossible to get the children out of the van fast enough.
Hinges on rear side door sticks. Bad design. Unable to grease thoroughly. I can only imagine that somewhere down the road this will lock and the hinge will detach from the side of the van. This is the second of the two side doors the one closer to the rear of the van.
Side door hinge has frozen. Door will not open or close. Consumer states that this hinge failure caused the wheelchair lift equipment to not work properly, the hinge has been replaced, however at consumers cost.
