When we purchased the car it had been a new service loaner and had just over 2,100 miles on it. The first occurrence as at around 2,400 miles. We were driving with the cruise control set at 68 MPH. All of the sudden the engine started revving as if it wasn't connected to the transmission. We coasted off onto the shoulder and there was no forward momentum when the accelerator pedal was pushed. I shifted into Low to see if the manual mode would work and the transmission made a loud CLUNK. I shifted into park and we sat a few minutes trying to figure out our next move. When I put it back into Drive the transmission reengaged and we made it to our destination.

A few days later same scenario I was driving with the cruise on and the engine started revving. I turned of the cruise and the transmission reengaged. Both times were about 15 to 20 miles from when we cold started the car. The dealers mechanic removed the transmission and said there was damage due to overheating. The transmission fluid smelled burnt, the 2-6 clutch plates were damaged and there was metal debris in the transmission. They determined it would cost more to repair the transmission than it would to replace it. A new transmission was installed and so far everything is OK.
