My Equinox was running rough so i went to get the oil changed as a starting point. The mechanic told me there was no oil on the dipstick. It was only 4600 miles between oil changes and the manufacturer recommends 6000. In January, 2021, I took it in for another oil change after holiday travel, 5,000 miles driven. Again, no oil on the dipstick. The mechanic recommended working with the dealer to have an oil consumption test performed. After the first 1,000 miles, my engine had burned 3/4 quart of oil. After the second 1,000 miles, my engine had burned 1/2 quart of oil. After the third 1,000 miles, my engine had burned another 1/2 quart of oil.

The dealer told me that Chevy will not typically repair the engine unless it is over 1 quart. The dealer told me to carry a quart of oil in the car but that doesn't fix the noise. My car sounds like I have never changed the oil in the 7 years I've had it. It runs rough and makes noise and sounds absolutely awful. I will not buy another Chevy and I will stay away from 2.4L engines because they sound like they have oil consumption issues across the board. The dealer told me is 2.4L Toyota did the same thing.

Bought this vehicle in 2018 when it had 60,000 miles. It has been driving well but oil consumption has increased this past year (2020). I have read about problems with excessive oil consumption with these 2.4 eco engines. There was a class action that was settled involving these engines covering 2010 through 2013 models. Are there any more recent class actions that have been initiated?

It is awful that GM is aware of these continued problems covering more than 2013 models but refuses to assist in repairs. I guess they wait to be sued. I also figure they could care less about people who depend on their cars to go to work and don't have extra money to repair GM's faulty products.

I went to go get my brakes done and my mechanic tells me I’m 2 quarts low on oil. Okay, let me get an oil change too. A few weeks go by when I hear ticking when I hit the gas. I take it back and he says I’m 2 quarts low, you are burning oil fast. I called GM to see about a recall and they told me it was only for selected years made. She tells me to take to the dealership and get an oil consumption test.

I come to find out I’m burning 2.5 quarts every 1000 miles. I was told to get my rings replaced which cost just about the same price as a new engine or go speak to a salesman. So now I’m calculating my miles and just dumping two quarts in anytime I get to a 1000 miles so that it won’t blow up on me and I haven’t even paid the car off yet. They know these engines are trash and they are sitting on their thumbs.
