Driving along when all of a sudden the car started shaking and the motor started making all kinds of noises. I pulled it over to check it and it was out of oil and all over the underside of the car.

Equinox LS 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

2014 Equinox, 80,000 miles. It started up and had the motor rattle. When warmed up it went away. The next day it started again and the motor rattle was worse. I went to the Dealer and they said I needed to replace the motor because the problem was inside motor. There were oil consumption issues and would cost more to rebuild the motor I have in car. Final cost $8100. I still owe 15k on car so and only car. So after dealer talked to GM I had to pay $5000 and GM would pay $3000 for a problem that GM caused. GM should be responsible for all repair cost seeing they sold a car with known defective engine problems. Not happy about having to pay this.......

Equinox LS 2.4L

At just a touch over 80,000 miles, I heard engine rattle at start up, then drove 30 miles. The next day at start up rattle was worse. I could hear it every time we pulled up to traffic light and came to a stop. I took car to my local garage where they started to look at it. They took out sensor in the Catalytic Converter, it was bent and looked like it had over heated. they put scope in hole and saw aluminum metal shavings in the Catalytic Converter. I logged complaint with GM over engine rattle and was instructed to take car to certified mechanic. So now it sits there until Sept. 14th when they do an inspection. I'm pretty sure motor is eating itself from the inside.

Update from Sep 16, 2020: Gm is pretty much at this time telling me I'm on my own to fix the problem with the motor

Update from Sep 18, 2020: The dealer and GM decided it was best to replace the motor with a refurbished motor at a cost of $8100. GM to pay $3,000, I have to pay $5,000. They created the problem - they should fix it at there cost.

For a mildly priced car, a loud rattling 4 cylinder is just unacceptable.

Equinox LT 2.4L 4 cyl

We took this problem to the Chevrolet dealership and they said nothing was wrong with the car. The quality of the car is awful. It's practically falling apart inside and out after 2 years and less than 30,000 miles! AVOID THIS CAR!! I don't think we will be purchasing another Chevrolet any time soon!

  • 2,500 miles

So, after I had my new car for about ONE MONTH it started making a rattling noise on start up; not every time, about every third time I would start the car. It would usually do it after I had driven it for awhile and it would sit for about two hours (like when I left work at noon for my lunch, etc.). It was embarrassing to have a new car and have it make a really horrible noise on start up.

I took it into the dealer and they couldn't "duplicate" the noise (of course). It kept happening so I bitched enough and they got it in. I told them to drive it about 5-7 miles around town, take it back to the dealer, park it and then start it up....they did and they finally got it to make the noise, so they were able to take it apart. I think my car was in the dealer for a total of TWO WEEKS. They finally diagnosed it and told me Chevy told them to check the cam shaft actuators which were all jacked up. They replaced them and I haven't heard the noise.

But I'm waiting for something else to go wrong. Frustrating when you only have 3000 miles on your car. :-/
