While driving 600 miles to visit a friend in November, I became nauseous and had a head ache. It became so bad I ended up in the emergency room. Though they did not do a carbon monoxide blood test, they did treat the symptoms. The next morning, upon arriving home, I went to my doctor. My doctor could not believe a carbon monoxide test wasn't run, as all the symptoms described in the hospital records and from me, told him I most likely had suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Other long drives I have always had the air conditioning running, thus enough air was being forced out the rear vent at the back of the car, under the bumper. Because the exhaust pipe does not extend out from under the bumper nor does it bend to the side of the car, exhaust enters the rear vent when the inside blowers are not running.
Placing a ten dollar tail pipe extension seems to have eliminated the problem.
