CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Equinox is plagued by a heating problem, as in the heater only blows cold air.

The reported cause of this problem is a small door, known as the air temperature blend door, which allows air to flow past the heater core. This door has a plastic connecting shaft to an electric motor and the shaft is prone to breaking after a few years. The problem has a typical repair cost of over $800.

The 2006 Equinox also has a number of reported problems ranging from the key getting stuck in the ignition, to failing speed sensors, and trouble starting the engine. All in all, this car sounds like one worth avoiding.

My 2006 Equinox was diagnosed on Monday with a broken blend door, damaged actuator (due to blend door being broken and leaking), and damaged heating core (due to blend door being broken and leaking). The reason I needed to get a diagnosis is because in mid April the fan was blowing but no heat was coming out. At this stage there was about 55,000 miles on the vehicle and we were just driving normal city driving limits. Needless to say I had the vehicle diagnosed and the total repair cost me $1500. The service guy I spoke to told me he sees about 1 in 25 Equinoxs with this same problem. Living in new england is it not a safety issue if we do not have heat" in the middle of winter we cannot defrost our windows!! this becomes a safety issue because there will be people out on the road driving with impaired vision due to foggy, snow covered, or ice covered windows who cannot afford to pay for these repairs. GM should definitely recall this vehicle for this reason alone which is clearly a safety issue!! what about people who have kids" you always hear about not leaving your kids in the car in extreme heat...I think that the same applies to extreme cold. Without heat the same problems can occur as with heat. Heat is a necessity in the winter!

The problem with the temp. Door not working is if you need to defog or defrost your windows and the heat won't work you cant see. And you don't know when this will happen. Thank god I was just trying to take the chill out of my vehicle on a cool fall evening, no matter what I did no heat. Stop to get gas, started the truck....... heat came on, now it won't go off.

My 2006 Chevy Equinox started blowing out cold air when I turned the heat on back in may of 2010. We decided to let it go since it was getting warmer out and now that it's getting colder here in mi, we decided to get the problem fixed because the defroster won't work. My husband is a mechanic and we started looking online to see what the problem might be and came across thousands of posts from people that have the same issue. The blend door is more than likely broken, the dash has to be taken apart to fix it and we can't afford to pay someone over $1000 to fix it. The car only has 48000 miles on it and I've never had any problems with GM cars in the past so we decided not to get the extended warranty. I will rethink this in the future because of the cheap way vehicles are being made now. Makes me sick we have to do all this work for a cheap part that needs to be replaced.

2006 Chevy Equinox "no heat" - this vehicle has a problem with the blend door breaking. My opinion, it is a bad design. Many Equinox owners are experiencing the same failure. It is unsafe because the defrost will not work. My failure happened at 72,000 miles. This is a known problem with the Equinox as well as the Pontiac torrent. I think GM should be forced to recall this at once. It seems the parts are only available from the dealer at a cost of $65 - $200, however the labor is $600 - $1200, no customer should have to spend that on an obvious design flaw.

The Chevy Equinox 2006 has had numerous problems with the heating system valve door breaking. It was explained to me by my dealer that this has been an ongoing problem with the car yet it is costing consumers approximately $1,000. To fix. There needs to be a recall on the trap door that releases the heat.

Nothing special done, blend door just broke, therefore we have no heater or defroster. Cannot drive car when it is cold and defroster is needed outside. Was told by a GM dealership $1200 just for labor. I think this should be recalled. There are probably thousands of these complaints online I have read.

I was lucky and found out when it was summer time and not cold out... my mechanics have replaced 2 different parts the temp switch and valve that they were told could be the problem and still no heat.. and I have done more research on the problem it turns out to be the heat door arm is broke and take 7-8 hours to remove the dash. Many Equinox have the same problem with out heat and defrost you cant see to use the car during cold weather this is a safety issue during the winter.

Heater does not work on 2006 Chevy Equinox due to an air temperature blend door behind the dash. This appears to be a large spread problem with Chevy Equinox. Any google search with the keywords "Chevy Equinox heater problem" will prove this. This is a major safety issue in the winter months. The window will not defrost making it impossible to see out of the front window. My research shows that Chevy will not make a recall on this because they feel it is not a safety issue. I would guess this is not the first complaint.

I have a Chevy Equinox 2006 in which the blend door actuator has broken. Apparently this is a problem with many 2006 models. I think it should be a recall. A car in Maine in winter without heat is a safety issue.

I have a 2006 Chevy Equinox. Earlier this week, the heater stopped working. I took it into a mechanic, and was told the heater door was not working properly. This car has 31,000 miles. Then we were driving the car home and got caught in a snow storm. Our visibility was extremely impaired and we almost hit 2 cars. We had to pull over every 10 blocks to manually defrost the windows and clear off the fog. After looking online, this seems to be a common problem with this make and model. No heater/defroster is a serious safety hazard in snowy conditions. Repair is estimated at $1500.

2006 Chevrolet Equinox "air blend door" not functioning properly and causing safety hazard. We purchased a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox from terry labonte Chevrolet in 2006. Now after approximately 4 years, there is a problem with the 'air blend door" malfunctioning in the heating/cooling system causing the safety hazard of the windows remaining iced/fogged up in certain weather conditions. Failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard no. 103, "windshield defrosting and defogging systems and with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard no. 101, controls and displays. I understand they have a recall on 2010 Equinox models but this problem is concurrent with several year models of the GM product line including our 2006 Equinox. All I can get from anyone is that we have to come in and pay $85 to get the problem "diagnosed". then if it is in face the air blend door, it will cost from $1,000 to $1,500 to fix the problem. I feel that the heating/cooling system and its components (except for the heater coil) should be functional for the lifetime of the car and any malfunctioning items within should be a safety violation and that the vehicle be fixed for free. They need to recall all GM models of vehicles that have this same problem.
