CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Equinox is plagued by a heating problem, as in the heater only blows cold air.

The reported cause of this problem is a small door, known as the air temperature blend door, which allows air to flow past the heater core. This door has a plastic connecting shaft to an electric motor and the shaft is prone to breaking after a few years. The problem has a typical repair cost of over $800.

The 2006 Equinox also has a number of reported problems ranging from the key getting stuck in the ignition, to failing speed sensors, and trouble starting the engine. All in all, this car sounds like one worth avoiding.

I have had this car for 41/2 years and the heater blows cold air. It has been fixed once under warranty, then the next two times it has cost me $900.00 each time to have it fixed. Well guess what it is broken again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another $900.00 down the drain. I own a business and and for the past 28 years have bought only GM cars. Wonder if people have this much trouble with Ford, Nissan, ETC. But this problem with this Equinox is getting a bit ridiculous. They say they won't recall the part because it is not a hazard. What do they call driving down the road with ice on your windshield and you can't see and rearend someone. Come on GM give us a break and recall this problem.. Before someone does have an accident because of non working heater.

I am really frustrated with this car. I have had it since March 2009. It started off being a very dependable car. In May of 2009, we took it on family vacation to Florida. About half way there, the air froze up and quit blowing cold air. We stopped for a break and let it cool off and it started blowing cold again only to freeze up again about 20 miles down the road. Since then I have not had an issue with the air. This past Tuesday morning, I went out to start my car, as I do every morning when it is cold. When my daughter and I got in to go to school and work it was freezing cold in my car. I thought maybe it needed more time to warm up. Well it never did,. It is blowing cold air still. I see a lot of people are having or have had this same issue with this model Equinox. I think they should recall the part or do something because from what I am reading online it is going to be a headache and be quite pricey. Fortunately, my husband is a great handyman and believes he can fix it himself. I just dread the headache of taking the WHOLE dash apart to get to one tiny piece of plastic. We really need something done about this from the manufacturer. It's pretty sad foreign car manufacturers take responsibility and take care of their customers. Come on US keep the money and tax dollars here and keep us customers HAPPY!!!

I have now read all the previous complaints about the 2006 Equinox blowing out cold air when it should be blowing out heat. My vehicle's diagnosis is also the air temperature door/valve. I am really disgusted to see that GM has refused to recall this issue. My wife called the National Transportation and Safety Board and they informed her to give them a call back after the diagnosis and they will file a complaint. I recommend that everyone who has this problem do the same. It may take a while but if a recall is issued then we would be entitled to be reimbursed. I have been a Chevy (GM) man for years but no longer. I will never buy another GM product. GM is a joke! Changing from metal to plastic to save money when this makes the vehicle unsafe to drive. What a poor example of service and concern for us consumers.

I have a 2006 Chevy Equinox, loaded. So pretty with the exception that the heat wouldn't. come out hot starting in August 2010. I work all the time, very long hours as a ''Governess Nanny''. It wasn't so cold in Aug. but now that i'm off, i have time to get it looked at. I was told it was the thermostat, so i went and bought a thermostat, had it put on and still no heat. That cost $ 125.00. Now i took it to be put on the machine, that cost $100.00. Now i am told it is the heater core, the dealer says 1,200 and Monro muffler and brakes say $750.00.

I am on a fixed income, Lord where do i go from here. I have Lupus, Showgreene, and Bronciatis. I cannot afford to be cold like this. GM please help me.

Thank You,

I have been on several sites and there are many car owners with this same problem! Why is Chevrolet so slow in calling a recall? How many people does this need to happen to before something is done? I need my car for work and I live an hour away who wants to be stuck in the winter with no heat!

It's amazing that a vehicle only 3 years old does not have heat. The warranty has expired so I'm making the payments, insurance and small maintenance issues. I love the vehicle but not without heat when it is cold. It just doesn't make sense.

I will let you know the outcome with warranty or recall when I talk to the dealer on Monday. If you unplug the motor under the dash (when you remove the glove box) you get heat. When you plug in back in the vent door flips and you get cool. My vent or blend door is seized and I am sure the whole dash will have to be removed to fix.

Update from Jul 27, 2010: Had my Equinox in to fix the no heat problem. As I suspected, the vent door inside the dash was broken(arm) Thank god for warranty. It took a day and a half. GM had to rip out the dash and a few other things under the hood. Parts were $104. Labor costs were around $800 plus taxes. The vent door is controlled by a plastic arm which was at one time a metal part. GM made the change to plastic to save money.

I live in Alberta and we just got 4 inches of snow today and - 2 Celsius [Freezing]. I can not drive the vehicle as it will not defrost the windows without heat. This absolutely should be recalled. I sure hope everyone that has had this happen has reported this to the National Transport and Safety Department!

I can't believe that GM/Chevy has not recalled for this part. I have read hundreds of complaints regarding the heater/defrogger not blowing out hot air. This is a huge problem in the winter time. I will never buy another GM car if they do not make this right and recall this part.

This car is an absolute piece of sh*t. Trade in value is about 6500 and I owe 10000. Now its gonna cost me 1400 to fix this damn vent door. I have a 1 in. stack of papers of repairs for this car. Never, never will recommend a Chevy vehicle. From day 1 I have had many, many problems. This one is about the last straw. I'm thinking a telephone pole is even too good for this car. May drown it.

I had just test drove my 06 equinox and realized the car was not heating up good but didnt make a big deal of it just thinking it had been sitting a while, so the dealership let me drive it home for the night and next day, that night the heat never really got hot it was warm or cool so i didnt drive it until it was time to take it back. I let the sales person know what was going on and he mentioned something of the doors in the vents that i have now seen are a complaint, but when it was fixed he said the thermostat was stuck and the shop had fixed it. So having not double checked i bought the car and took it the next day and once again the heat is not fixed so i take it back and leave it once again. So i get on the computer to check for complaints and i see that it is a major problem with the 06s. I am now waiting for the problem to be fixed as i am writing this note confused and unsure what to do ive only owned the car 1 day and already debating if its worth keepin!!

On a somewhat cold night in September, my husband and I were out and went to turn on the heat. It only blew cold. We looked and had seen that we were 100 miles over the warranty. The dealership was contacted the following day and they said that they wouldn't even look at it unless we paid them $100.00. So we have since gone to other places, 4 others have all said the same thing. Its the door that wont open to let the warm air in. Not one person wants to touch it because off all the work it will take to fix that stupid door. There are many words that I can think of when I think of my car. The best thing I can say is IT SUCKS!!! Every day that I look at the temp outside and see its in the teens on my way to work, I say F%&* you GMC. If anyone ask me if I like my car I really do tell them and I will never buy and product made by GMC nor will anyone in my family. They know how rude the dealer has been to us. They know that my 3 children a freezing and because of tough times, we have to wait till tax time to get it fix.

I have a 2006 chevy Equinox and all of a sudden the heat was not working. Here i found out that there has been alot of problems with the heater I heard there is a little leaver that controls the heat door. They say it would cost anywhere from $800 to $1000 to repair I think GM should repair this problem for free.since they no that the plastic arm breaks now they are replacing it with a metal arm. I CAN'T BELIEVE THERE IS NOT A RECALL FOR THIS LITTLE PLASTIC THING THAT OPENS AND CLOSES TO CHANGE FROM HOT TO COLD AIR. I HAVE CHILDREN I HAVE TO TAKE PLACES. I WAS TOLD THIS WOULD COST ME 1700.00 DOLLARS TO FIX. IN THIS ECONOMY AND XMAS, WHAT THE HELL GM, ONLY GIVING A 36000 MILE WARRANTY ON THIS. I WAS TOLD THIS HAPPENS WITH ALL THE CARS FROM A DEALERSHIP. GM STEP UP TO THE PLATE. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX THIS. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!

Update from Nov 30, 2009: WELL, I HAD TO GET MY CAR FIXED BECAUSE I CAN'T GO IN THE WINTER TIME WITH NO DEFROST, THAT IS A SAFETY HAZARD, WHICH SHOULD RECALL THIS PART!!! ANYWAY, FOUND A GUY THAT WOULD DO IT FOR 900.00 DOLLARS. THE PART ONLY COST 80.00, HE TOLD ME THAT GM CHANGED THE PART TO A METAL ARM TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOOR RATHER THEN A PLASTIC ARM!!! WAY TO GO GM, WHY DIDN'T YOU MAKE IT WITH A METAL ARM IN THE FIRST PLACE. CAN I TELL YOU GM YOU MADE MY 8YR OLDS XMAS A SMALL ONE DUE TO YOUR INCOMPATIENCE OF RECALLING A PART THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME!!! READ ALL THE COMPLIANTS THAT APPLY TO THIS. HAVEING NO DEFROST IS A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN DRIVING~!!!!!! WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVEY OR GM CAR AGAIN!!!! NEVER!!

Now that I work for a car dealership the mechanics are going to TRY to see what is wrong and if they can fix it at a reasonable cost. But GM, come on!!!! This shouldn't happen to a car that is less than 4 yrs old!!!! It's bullshit. I'm completely disgusted by this entire thing!
