Cruze LS 1.8L

At 50,00 miles AC compressor went out, entire system was replaced for $1500. At 98,000 AC compressor went out again ($1500 again).

At 90,000 miles, constant coolant leak led to overheating and had a new aluminum thermostat housing installed to replaced the defective-designed plastic housing ($600). At 100,000 miles, engine started running rough and check engine light on. Numerous codes. Replaced coil pack (a common problem with these cars) and valve cover which contains the PCV valve (another common problem with these cars) and cam solenoid. Also, "change timing belt" warning came on (who still uses a timing belts now days??). Another $600 to replace timing belt, serpentine belt, and water pump. Ran well for a couple weeks then engine started running too rough to idle and it finally died, which stranded my daughter on the side of the road in the middle of the night. Had it towed to a shop. Shop said it kept blowing fuses to the coil and fuel injector. They replaced the coil pack again and the burned up fuel injector. Mechanics at 2 separate shops said these cars were junk (especially the 1.4L turbos) and I should ditch it ASAP since it was probably unfixable. It ran OK driving home but as soon as I started it up, it again ran rough and died. Smell of burning wires under the hood. Did an internet search and found that burning up coil packs was a common problem as was burned up wires/connector to the ECM. Pulled the plug to the ECM, and the pins to the coil pack and fuel injector on the ECM were melted off. Now the car needed a new wiring harness and ECM. After wasting more than $5000 over the course of a few months to keep it running, I decided to cut my losses and get rid of it.

Bought a new vehicle and gave this well-maintained car to them for nothing as long as they would tow it away. I have bought almost exclusively Chevrolet vehicles my entire life, but I will never buy another Chevrolet vehicle after this.

My daughter bought this car, paid CASH, a LOT OF CASH, to a dealer who tried to push the extended warranty on her. She thought that was odd and since she was trying to avoid payments or additional expenses and had sunk all her cash into the car she declined. BIG MISTAKE. This car has been a lemon from the first month (she has had it all of 4 months and it's been in the shop about half that time).

NOW the check engine light is on, code is telling her it's the camshaft actuator. She has clean oil although even the dealer didn't have the correct oil filter which on this car is critical. After market is a no no.

Car is misfiring, smoking, stops moving, IN TRAFFIC. Just happens randomly. She has sunk almost 700 in repairs in various other mechanical problems in only 4 months. I told her to skip this car, she HAD TO HAVE IT. God knows why.

NEVER BUY THIS CAR.

With the never ending problems with this car, I am advising her to dump it as soon as it's drivable and buy a VW. The reconditioned diesels are all over this area and have low miles plus a factory warranty of 40,000 miles on the new engines.

This is just crazy. Never owed a GM product before and never will again.

The Chevy Cruze truthfully is one of the worst cars ever built. I bought mine 3 years ago with 65,000km on the clock, it is now at 175,000 and has been an endless money pit. I am now on my 4th engine as it simultaneously burnt and cracked valves in cylinders 2 and 3. 2 years ago, at 90,000km it cracked a valve in cylinder number 4, so this is the third time the head has had to come off as it also cracked 2 pistons a couple years ago. The car has always burned a very concerning amount of oil, but of course, GM claims this is normal... with GM quality in the last 20 years, it’s no surprise. I would not let my worst enemy buy a GM product.

Shame on General Motors. This engine is a disaster. Bought the car used in April 2019. In the shop every other week. Now unable to drive due to misfiring , persistent code for camshaft and cylinder head problem. Mechanics are at a loss. Chevy dealership at a loss. So many warranty repairs from others, GM is taking notice. This is a serious problem, either from the part supplier, the assembly plant or design. Paid 9000 cash for the car, it's NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. Shuts down, steering locks up, misfires, smokes, leaks coolant and oil. Seriously? These need complete recalls like VW did with their diesel engines a few years ago. Dealers are forced to remove entire timing systems and replace for newer warranty complaints. Extend the warranty, recall these cars, do something. Never touching GM products again. My 2002 VW Jetta with 207k miles is more reliable.

Cruze 1LT 1.4L I4

I have owned this car for only 1 year and it has been nothing but a hole in my pocket, the thermostat was the first thing to fail in my car, good thing it was covered under warranty or else I would have had to have paid out of pocket. Then, the car gave out a check engine light, turned out it was a small cable wire that connected to the battery; it was also covered under warranty and was a recall issued by GM but the previous owner never got the problem recalled. Then the parking brake began starting to stick, had to loosen it myself by taking the wheel off and spraying some WD-40 on the cable. Then today, as I was driving to look at a used truck; a bunch of warning lights just suddenly went in the dash, the traction control and check engine light both came on. The check engine light was flashing which indicated engine misfire; had no choice but to drive the car back 80KM to a GM dealership with an engine that wouldn't properly idle and sounded terrible going uphill.
