I had a coolant leak and was replacing parts one at a time. The last thing was the water pump. It was a very slow leak, so I carried coolant with me and checked it regularly. One day I was driving down a 70 mph 2 lane road with thick pavement and a very narrow shoulder. My message center came up and said the car was overheating. Within a matter of a few seconds, the temp gauge was in the red and the engine stalled leaving me with no brakes or steering.
The car dropped off the pavement into gravel, went out of control, popped back up onto the pavement and slammed into the side a vehicle attempting to pass me, spinning my car out of control. No airbags deployed so I wound up with a gash in my head, a severe concussion and broken ribs.
I called GM, they sent an "expert" to analyze my car, sent me some gibberish printout that may as well have been in Chinese and claimed no liability. In closing, stated that if I were to pursue any further action, I was responsible for keeping the vehicle in the same immediate condition after the accident, knowing I no longer had possession of the car 2 months later.
Update from Jan 28, 2021: After the accident, I Googled the water pump and found GM added an extended warranty for that model and year, but was told that not all were included and mine was not.
