When I purchased my 2001 Corvette Convertible, my friend said the turn signal wouldn't work a few times each year. He said, all I had to do was to tap the 4-way EM switch, and It would be fine. Well, I tried it the first time it malfunctioned, and it worked. But, that's not me.
I did a lot of reading, and found others had had a similar problem occasionally. They had different ideas to the cause of it. However the one I new could cause my problem, could be repeated by tapping the 4-way Em switch. So, I turned the turn signal on, and repeatedly did it until, it would only operate a couple of times when I tried it. I purchased a new 4-way EM switch and installed it. Problem solved! All the repair manuals indicate the whole dash must be removed to get to the switch.
However, one person said, if your hands were not really big, it could be done through the radio opening in the dash. I removed the center console, the HVAC electronic controls, the radio, and was able to do it through the opening for the radio. The hardest part was depressing the top detent on the switch with a bent welding rod, the bottom detent with a small screwdriver, while pushing the switch into the dash with another screwdriver held in my mouth. But, most anything is better than removing the dash on a C5 Vette. A lot of work, to replace a $20 switch. It doesn't always have to be done by the book! GOOD LUCK.
