I am in the process of having my forth steering column replaced on my 1999 Corvette, manual transmission. But the problem that I am reporting is that there were two times that this car ran out of gas with over 100 miles still showing on the distance to empty display.the last time I was having the steering column replaced I found a service bulletin, tsb # 02-06-04-010A pertaining to erratic fuel level readings and had the dealer correct the problem. Both times running out of fuel were at night time and the last time I was stranded on the top of a bridge with my daughter. We were almost hit 4 times by cars driving by because there was no place to safely pull over. I feel this should be a recall item because it leads you to a false sense of security in having fuel and when the car stops running, you loose the ability to steer the car safely.
The fuel gauge on my 1999 Chevrolet Corvette has never worked properly and now the vehicle stops despite having several gallons of fuel in the tank. I have been stranded several times. Most recently in a very dangerous traffic situation. I believe this is now a true safety concern. There also appears to be several service bulletins out on this problems so it does not appear to be isolated.
