The oil pressure sensor on the back of the engine failed and began dumping all the oil out of the engine. Fortunately I was driving in the city at the time and happened to be near a garage. By the time I noticed the smell I had lost about four of the five quarts of oil in the engine. The sensor is made of plastic and if you have any doubts at all about the one on your car, replace it now.
