Getting daily "stabilitrac not working" and "service power steering" and "service 4wd" console messages then THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT WHILE I'M DRIVING CAUSING ME TO WRENCH HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL IN ORDER TO TURN. I'm scared I'm going to hit something because I won't be able to turn quick or hard enough to avoid crashing. 2015s have a recall for this issue and the issue hasn't been corrected. Why hasn't a recall been issued on the 2016s? I contacted GM Customer Care 1-800-462-8782 and issued a complaint and was told there is no cost assistance I'm eligible for. It is not comforting to discover that GM Chevrolet isn't concerned about product safety and the safety of their customers. So, then I contacted National Highway Administration (NHTSA.gov) 1-888-327-4236 and filed an Office Defects Investigation ODI complaint in hopes that an investigation will ensue. So far, the outcome of this issue is completely unacceptable.

Afraid to drive vehicle which is my only means of transportation. Contacted dealer I purchased it from and they want $179 just to diagnose the problem. I am 77 years old with disabilities and when the power steering goes out its all I can do to get the vehicle back in the driveway. The fist time it happened I had driven approx. 15 miles. I have driven 3 miles and it comes on. Yesterday I drove approx. 20 miles, first in the neighborhood and then took it on the highway before it came on.

This vehicle was manufactured in August 2015 and purchased in October 2015 and they are telling me it is not covered under the 2015 recall based on the vin#. I have gotten conflicting information from different sites and apparently there have been complaints of this issue on both the 2015 & 2016 Colorado truck. Needless to say, I am not able to raise the hood and check this out myself and I am to the point of trusting no one. I contacted NHTSA and they told me it was not covered under recall, although they did have complaints of this issue on the 2016 and I understand there is an open class action suit against GM. I should not have to hire an attorney to get satisfaction on what is clearly manufacturing defect.

4 times the Stabilitracker light came on and the power steering goes off. Took to local dealer to fix twice. Out $450 and problem still arises. was told I needed a new Steering Angler sensor for $2k plus labor and was on back order. Told I could still drive it. Didn't believe them. Talked to another dealers mechanic and told it uses a rack and pinion not an angler sensor. Don't know who to believe. Can reset by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting. Have seen all kinds of similar situations on Canyons on the Internet. Told recall on 2015 but not 2016. I really like the truck but this is starting to question that.

On February 26 2022 my power steering quit working while driving on a highway. I pulled over, turned off engine and waited a few minutes, restarted the engine and it worked fine. It has since happened twice more in the month of April. I get an error message that says "stabilitrac not working", and "service power steering". I now cannot drive it on the interstate for fear of a crash and possible death.

Without warning, the power steering on my 2016 Colorado quit while driving on a city street. With great effort, I could steer enough to get the truck home. It is my understanding that GM is aware of this problem and has issued a recall for the 2015 Colorado. I don't know why they didn't add the 2016 to the recall as I believe this is a significant problem occurring in quite a few vehicles.

Apparently a recall on 2015 version, now same or similar issue on 2016 but without a recall. This is a serious and dangerous issue to not be covered by a recall.

2016 Colorado, same problem here., this is what I did...

I went down the engine, removed every single electrical harness that was coming from the Steering drive and pinion,

very easy to find, Just remove the Undercover (poor plastic cover) and Steel plate under the steering drive.

You can see all the connections and harness from the top, (you can’t work from here) just open the hood, now you are seeing the engine, look down then middle of the engine, you can see the chassis, and some harness, these are the ones,

I found 2 bad seals, The bigger electrical harness, the one that comes from the computer, it has a poor seal, all the little cables (top Ones) are exposed to water. dirt etc. who knows what.... Yes, there is a seal between the harness connection, but the little cables that connect into the harness from the back, these connections are totally open, with some water energy can jump from cable to cable

Unplugged all connections, including the ones on the steering motor, All of them had a Little lock., make sure you remove that lock, before you pull any cable Using CRC electrical cleaning spray every single one. Let them dry.

Then, I used liquid electrical plastic. covering every single exposed cable that goes into the back of the harness (now they are water proof), Let them dry

Then re-connect, make sure you hear a “CLICK” then re-lock

This big harness (computer) and the electrical cable (12v) had bad seal

I don't know who approved this bad design,

All these connections should be connected using a single cable from the steering drive to the computer, without middle connections or harness, and they should be on the back of the chassis, not on the front, especially if GMC uses a poor plastic cover... NOT ACCEPTALBE, even a piece of tire on road, or a road kill, can hit the plastic then the harness.

Problem start at 45000 miles... now at 60000 no problems since then. I live in Houston, rains almost every day.

I sent my 2016 Colorado to the shop for a "Service power steering" light, only to find out that this 3 year old vehicle with 28k miles on it had corrosion that was causing these problems. I messaged Chevy on facebook as well as went back and forth with my dealership to get the whole thing paid for. Chevy didn't seem to care to help, but the dealership covered the $450 repair. Gotta love that Chevy doesn't stand behind their mistakes and products! Hard to ever buy one again

Colorado Z71 3.6L

Power steering went out while making slow turn out of parking lot to main street.Extremely difficult to control vehicle. Almost hit two cars coming at me.Service power steering light came on, slick road light and traction control light also came on. Pretty dangerous situation. I implore all others with this problem to contact NHTSB. Chevy needs to recall the Colorado because this is a "when", not "if" situation.

Colorado Z-71 V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 52,400 miles

All the sudden every single notification that exists started blinking (service 4wd, power steering service, stabilitrak service, check oil pressure, check oil, check engine), the speedometer started pinging up and down and same with the RPM's.

Then the really scary thing happened- THE POWER STEERING WENT COMPLETELY OUT WHILE DRIVING.

Chevrolet was a nightmare to deal with and they could not care less about my problem. Not covered under any kind of warranty and they clearly do not stand behind their product, even in a life threatening situation in one of their top selling products. Chevrolet has 100% lost a customer for life, I will be going to Ford or Toyota and will be sharing my story about their faulty truck and HORRIBLE customer service (its basically absent)

I wish I had money for lawyers because this seems like a lawsuit to me.
