This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. Consumer writes in regards to corrosion of the hydraulic brake lines causing fluid loss and impairment of full system braking. The consumer stated an investigation showed the problem was due to a manufacturing defect.
The rear brakes clunked and squeaked. Took it to the Chevy dealership in November 2011. They replaced the pads and turned the rotors. Since the car was two months out of warranty the charge was $307.40. Within 30 days the brakes started making the noise again but not as often or as loud. The sound has gotten progressively worse and more often. Instead of a squeak there is now an extremely loud grinding noise when stopping, particularly when there is moisture present. The brake pads still have plenty of material on them and the rotors are smooth. The noise is deafening in parking garages and can easily be heard 1/8th of a mile away. Stopping distance has increased and the vehicle does not feel safe.
Whenever my rear disc brakes get wet and then dry off - they make a very load squealing noise. I have to make sure I back out of my garage without braking. I am afraid the noise will wake my daughter because her bedroom is above the garage. I have had it in to the Chevy dealer to check it out and they tell me the brakes are fine. Also, they know this model car does have this problem. If GM knows about this why do they not remedy it. Once I drive it a few miles it seems to go away. But once the rear brakes get wet again I guarantee the squeal will be back.
Left front brake grabs and won't let go, causes pull to left..replaced brake hose, and caliper, still does it, believe it will kill my family yet..it does it for few miles, quits, then repeats at any given time..
My 2008 Chevy Cobalt came without ABS braking system. This winter when I tried braking (even at low speeds) the rear of the car lost control and attempts to spin the car out of control. After three trips to the dealer, GM was called by the dealer. They were told that GM was aware of the problem because of the light back end of the car and there was no fix. This is a very dangerous car. I no longer drive it. I had several near incidents on snow because of this design problem.
I own a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt lt sedan, been having several problems relating to the braking system in the car. There is a strong pulsation from the brakes. Was told this was normal, but not quite sure since other Cobalt owners are experiencing the same. Have not been to GM to have it checked, but was told over the phone that was normal.
I own a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt lt sedan, been having several problems relating to the braking system in the car. There is a strong pulsation from the brakes, squealing, and the brakes lock up and pull to the left easily. While braking on the highway the brakes locked up and the car went into a skid, GM can not find anything wrong with the car after 6 repair attempts and therefore can't fix it. I was recently told by dealer, I would just have to live with it. This is a safety problem with the vehicle and im not "just living with it" after doing my research online I am finding people with the same complaints regarding there Cobalts in fact 2 people I know have the same problem with there's.... please contact for more information.
