CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Cobalt continued to carry the torch first lit by the 2005 model year. To be clear, that torch is burning bright with widespread power steering issues, electrical curiosities and a dangerous ignition switch defect which led to a massive recall by GM. This isn’t a great torch to carry.
The 2006 added it’s own special flare with gas leaks due to cracks in the “return portion of the modular reservoir assembly.” A recall of 2006 Cobalts was issued to fix the problem, but only to vehicles sold in or current registered in Arizona and Nevada, leaving other owners to pay for repairs themselves.
Between this car stalling while driving, giving owners fits with power steering failure and having it be a potential tinderbox because of gas leaks, we felt we had no other option than to award it our “Avoid Like the Plague” badge.

Ever drive over a bump or small stone with those wheel covers on your Cobalt? Doesn't take long before these cheap plastic bolt on's start to rattle like a train rolling through town. This may not be as bad as other problems I, or you, may have had but it certainly should have been an indicator of what was to come. When people recognize your car pulling in by the sound of the shaking plastic then it is time to consider hitting up a wheel shop and installing some alloy wheels. A set of Borbet set me back $400 but now the shake and rattle is gone and I can quietly sneak in my driveway at night. It really blows my mind how GM can manufacture such inferior parts then attempt to beg your pardon and ask for money from the Government. Get real... It is no accident that GM, excuse me, Motors Liquadation (MTLQQ.PK), is trading for under a buck these days. Yes that is GM's new stock symbol and yes it is on the pink sheets. Poorly managed company manufacturing poorly made cars with corners cut in every direction. Next time I will not be so stupid when I buy a car.
