CarComplaints.com Notes: The Cobalt was introduced to replace two of Chevy’s smaller cars, the Cavalier and Prizm. But the compact’s fresh start that Chevy was hoping for was riddled with issues, most notably widespread power steering failure.
The power steering failed so often that GM was forced to issue a recall in March, 2010. Great, but what about other problems like the key getting stuck in the ignition or all the other electrical demons this car possesses?
And, oh yes — then there’s the terribly dangerous issue where the Cobalt randomly shuts off while driving. As it turns out, that problem is related to GM’s massive 2014 recall for a dangerous ignition switch defect. A recall that eventually ballooned to 2.6 million vehicles in one of the automotive industry’s biggest scandals.

My 2005 Coboalt will just randomly shut down on me while driving. I've checked every connection I can and have it narrowed down to the ecm circuit but I can't pinpoint it any further without taking it to a dealer. The dealer near me says mine isn't one of the affected cars going by my vin #. Then won't explain it to me without the 800 dollar bill attached to my question.
While at it they tell me why my air bags didn't deploy two weeks ago when I was run off the road and had a hard collision with a guard rail and a cement sewage wall that busted up my car real good on drivers side, which is where the sensor is located. It took my light assembly apart, destroyed my front bumper, grill, fog light, fender bent the drivers door and split my steering knuckle in half right between the two bolts that hold on my brand new strut! Oh and let me not forget the fact it also chipped my rim. Luckily it didn't blow out my new tire!
Now need to replace all these parts and surely don't have the money for that plus an alignment and paint job even with me and a friend doing the brunt of the work to make it driveable again! Still have a P.O.S.that I cant rely on to get me to where I have to go without breaking down! Now I need to worry about if my airbags will work or if they will just pop on the next pothole I hit? WTH?
Dam Chevy, I've been a loyal customer lover of mainly old school muscle but this new crap sucks! My opinion is more electronics don't make for a better or safer car! Hell you could run a 55 Chevy through a wall and still drive it away! This turd is like a beer can getting run over by a truck! Carfagno Chevy in Norristown can suck it when they tell me bring it in and we'll fix you right up at cost! Bite me bitches! I'll swap to a Ford first and put an old 383 stroker in it and call it a day before that happens, thanks!
Also the it will just go into limp mode, the trans sounds like an old rear with a pinion gear that is way out of tolerance and whines from 2-4th hit 5th all good! Or if it has a load on it it is quiet! tThe paint has been peeling since my niece owned the car don't know what exact mileage was but she put a bunch of money into it and even did the recall on ignition around 2008.
I've owned it approx 2 yrs and have done a ton of work on it and countless hrs of time trying to diagnose the problems but I'm old school and on disability so cant afford to keep messing with it! Really bummed out. It's a cool little car but not like my 70 Nova.
The list of crap wrong is too much for me to keep typing! So I'll end it here and say.. can't wait to get a new truck and ride my Harley during fair days! Screw this crap, I'll take an old car even a Ford before going through this again!
