CarComplaints.com Notes: The Cobalt was introduced to replace two of Chevy’s smaller cars, the Cavalier and Prizm. But the compact’s fresh start that Chevy was hoping for was riddled with issues, most notably widespread power steering failure.
The power steering failed so often that GM was forced to issue a recall in March, 2010. Great, but what about other problems like the key getting stuck in the ignition or all the other electrical demons this car possesses?
And, oh yes — then there’s the terribly dangerous issue where the Cobalt randomly shuts off while driving. As it turns out, that problem is related to GM’s massive 2014 recall for a dangerous ignition switch defect. A recall that eventually ballooned to 2.6 million vehicles in one of the automotive industry’s biggest scandals.

I had ignition switch recall fixed, picked up my car. The mechanic had it started and opened the door for me, I got in and drove away within 15 minutes I noticed my turn signals not going off automatically after I make a turn because I had someone pull out in front of me thinking I was turning, but my signal just stayed on from my last turn a mile or so ago. So I tested the signal and as I thought it was not shutting off automatically anymore.
I got on the phone and called Century Three Chevy that I had just left 20 minutes earlier, they were gone for the weekend due to the Easter holiday I was told. I went onward toward home but I stopped at a local store to run in. I locked my doors as I usually do, when I came out to get in my car the new keys that they gave me at Century Three Chevy after changing the recalled ignition didn't work to open my doors or my trunk. So this turns into a big pain in my rear to get into my car, I'm steaming mad at this point, like I haven't already been inconvenienced enough with this piece of crap cobalt.
Between the air conditioner leaking into the car, the door handles not working properly, the turn signal bulbs in the rear burning out every week, the car just riding like the giant turd it is, having to make appointments, my time must not be worth anything according to GM. Now it's Monday and I call Chevy to tell them my turn signals got messed up when they put the recalled ignition in. They said that has nothing to do with the turn signals, seems to me they use to work perfectly before I gave it to save the mechanic at Century Three Chevy. That was the one thing that I didn't have a prior problem in this crap wagon. It's only 6 inches across the steering column from ignition switch that was replaced , maybe they bumped something! maybe a loosened wire! from replacing ignition.
But now this is my problem once again, just like everything else on the car, the only thing GM will finally taken responsibility on this car is after unfortunate people lose their lives. They mess up more stuff on this car for me. I would just like this car to go out of my life and finally have some peace but I can't afford to just walk away. Who would want to buy into this nightmare? The only way you could sell this car is to find someone who's been hiding under a rock ,and don't know what a Cobalt is or lie, lie, lie, and tell someone it's the greatest car ever and I've never had any of the major problems.
This car has its name Christine, it heals itself. So at this point I can't stick this crap pile on anyone else and sleep at night or look in the mirror so I guess its all mine. I'll just sit around and wait for the next problem, hopefully it's not fatal to anyone and hope I can someday move on from GM Chevy Cobalt and any of their problem vehicles and never look back and try not to remember the bad dreams, sleepless nights, anxiety, and all the time lost in my life.
Maybe afford a Toyota or Nissan, something a little better?
