Fuel pump failure on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier appeared to be a common problem on all Cavaliers as per website www.topix.net/forum/autos/Chevrolet. Cavalier and Chevrolet were doing nothing about it. Car just shut off in middle of road, almost was hit from rear by anothe R car, a safety defect. A web search revealed hundreds of failures.
The fuel pump had to be replaced on the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier after only 65,000 miles. I went to a number of different websites with hundreds of people having the same problem with their fuel pump of the same year and make/model with approximately the same miles. There needs to be a recall.
2003 Chevy Cavalier- on third fuel pump replacement, gauge that reads gas to gas hand operates intermittently and fuel pump quits working, no warning, happens suddenly.
On April 14 2007 my husband went outside to start the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier we purchased in October of 2006, the car has 53000 miles on it. The car would not start. Upon taking the car to a private mechanic we were told that the fuel pump had failed and that we were lucky we were not driving the car at the time as the car itself would have simply died in the middle of the road. The mechanic fixed the car and repairs ran almost $600. I then called Chevrolet to complain and they would not assist me in this matter. Upon researching this issue further I found a website of complaints from 90 consumer's regarding this same issue with the same year make and model. The web address is www.topix.net/forum/autos/Chevrolet-Cavalier/tvinic5tfu5sfsi5H/P3. please check into this.
Vehicle sputtered and then stalled while driving in heavy traffic. There were approximately 48000 miles on the odometer when the failure occurred. Car was towed to service station where the fuel pump was replaced at a cost of around $800.
Consumer filled tank up, while still having over a half a tank, car would not start after that. Car towed to Goodyear. Fuel pump had to be replaced at owners expense of $678. Mechanic told consumer a lot of Chevrolet cars fairly new and low mileage have been coming in to have fuel pump replaced.

The service engine soon, ABS and track off lights began turning off and on periodically in mid May 2005. The car was taken to the dealer on May 19, 2005 for routine service and for the warning lights just mentioned. The lights began turning on again and the car was taken back to the dealer on June 20, 2005. The leftwheel sensor, and an oxygen sensor were replaced, this, I was told, would fix the problem. On June 24th the car began miss firing on my way to work. The problem was so severe that I had to have the car towed to another dealer. This dealer's techincian informed me that the fuel pump was bad, and probably was on the 20th, when the other dealer serviced it. And more upsetting to me, I was further informed that the wheel sensor dealer #1 had replaced was still not working properly. I now have paid nearly $1200 in repair costs, and my car is still miss firing, the three lights I listed above are still on, and now the check engine light is on too. The car is totally unsafe to drive. It has just under 50K miles, I drive carefully and the car has been very well maintained. I truely believe there is a serious and dangerous defect with this vehicle that GM's trained mechanics are unable to diagnose and repair. This, I was told
The vehicle stopped dead while in motion. This is not the first time this happened, the consumer had to pull over to the shoulder. This happened many times while moving in traffic. The consumer felt that the vehicle may be qualified for the lemon law. The fuel pump had been replaced four times.
While driving at approximately 20 mph driver hit a bump in the road and the vehicle began to sputter and suddenly the engine stalled, causing the vehicle to lose power and completely shut off. Owner later contacted the manufacturer, and was told that this was his problem, and there was nothing else they could do.
While driving approximately every two months the brake light will illuminate the dash board. The fuel pump blew out. The heating a cooling went bad. The vehicle makes noise when making right turns. Consumer has not found out what it is as of yet. The vehicle has been into the dealer at least twenty times.
