This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Consumer requested recall information on a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier.. nar no address provided. The consumer had valve work done on the vehicle. The consumer believes the manufacturer should be responsible for this repair.
As described in prior defect reports, e.g. 98054A, my Cavalier has a leaking head gasket. However, since it was discovered after the warranty expired, the dealer & mfr have refused to repair it. I'm faced with a hefty repair bill for a known mfr's defect.
Consumer states they still having the same problems after the recall on head gasket has been perform on vehicle. Recall number unknown. Kyle Chevrolet 860-872-6530.
Since the end of August 2002, my car has been falling apart. It all started when my air conditioner stopped working. I had freon put back into it, but after a few days, the freon was gone. The mechanic put a dye into the system to see if there was a leak, but he couldn't see any problem. My car has always overheated in traffic. Oil is leaking from my head gaskets. Now, it is having trouble starting periodically. I was in camden when it wouldn't start. Now I'm afraid to drive it. When I start the car, a clicking noise comes from the starter. Oh yeah, I had the starter "fixed" a year ago because of the recall. There is a noise coming from my alternator. I don't know if it is the alternator or the starter that's keeping the car from starting. From what I've seen in my car and the complaints from others, this is not a reliable car.
The consumer noticed oil on the ground while the vehicle was sitting. The vehicle was taken to mechanic who changed the gasket but a leak was still present.

Head gasket leaking for the 3rd time. Apparently was fixed when I received the recall and brought into the dealer. GM not helpful. Dealer not helpful. Dealer drained all of my freon as well and broke my heater switch. GM tells me that this is a consumer/business problem and to contact the attorney general. After reading all of the other head gasket recall problems that appear to be the exact same issue, I see a class action suit against GM in the making.
Service due to coolant leakage because of a faulty head gasket on my 1995 Chevy Cavalier was not covered by dealer despite service bulletin #98054 and #98054A and the fact that my vehicle had 54,771 miles at the time of the failure.
The ignition switch failed. The bypass switch was disconnected and the ignition replaced at consumers expense. The consumer is requesting refund for the repair cost of defective parts. The vehicle would not start at times only a clicking sound is heard. The starter was replaced, but the problem still exists. Also, the engine light stayed illuminated and it intermittently runs rough at idle.'s
The gasket was leaking coolant from the vehicle. The consumer is concern because she had the recall done. #recall 98054 and the problem is still there. The dealership is aware of the problem.
Consumer was informed by an auto mechanic that the head gasket for the vehicle were apart of a recall, consumer requested reimbursement from the manufacturer but was denied because the vehicle was not taken to a GM dealer.
The head gasket was replaced on 5/1/97, 11/13/98, and 3/23/00, as directed by NHTSA, however the work has not yet solved the problem. I am told that the vehicle no longer qualifies for repair under Chevrolet special policy # 98054A, covering the admittedly faulty cylinder head/gasket. The dealership says that I must now pay for the repair, which must include replacement or repair of the cylinder head. This was not included in the previous work but apparently should have been.
While driving, thick heavy smoke came from head gasket, also anti-freeze leaked from vehicle. This was the third time this matter had occurred. Took to dealer. It has been repaired twice, and it was happening again.
My wife drive this car. It was taken into the dealer 4-5 times to get a stalling problem fixed. During one trip the replaced a head gasket at 77,764 miles on a bulletin from GM. The didnt check the head for defects. The dealer told us GM only let them replace the head gasket. It is now 15 months later and 14,000 miles on it, the head gasket has failed again. GM said it is not covered and the dealership want 1, 100 to fix it. Seems to me GM has a problem with bad head gaskets and instead of fixing the head and gasket right the first time, the just change the gasket and when it is out of warrenty stick it to the customer.
"low antifreeze" light comes on and off. Adding antifreeze fixes temporarily, and we still smell fumes from hood. Informed by manufacturer of faulty cylinder head gasket months before problem manifested. Despite countless repairs, light comes on and car cuts off sporadically. No reimbursement for repairs. Middle back seat belt also releases, causing our toddler's child seat to tip over when vehicle turns corners.
