For several months when I go to take the key out of my ignition it won't let go. At first I could turn the car back on and put it in park again and it would release. Then I had to start putting it in park hard, and I could hear an audible "click" in the steering wheel and the key would release. Now, I have to try multiple times to do either of these things and it can take twenty to 30 minutes before my key will release. I have contacted two mechanics, they both said it is a chevy/dealership problem. That this is a something chevy should be recalling but isn't, It's a design flaw but they don't care. I found a workaround fix and the link to this site here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdqBId9AMHs

I am not sure but from what I understand from my research is there is a screw that is not releasing the key, and it is a possibly caused by a defective shifter assembly. I have an appointment in 3 weeks with my local chevy dealership. I don't know if they will know how to fix it. I have heard of others going in and being charged absurd amounts of money and still having the problem. They are charging me $149 right off the bat for a diagnostic, so I'm really nervous

I contacted chevrolet.com and an agent told me:

"I understand that you may have read and believed that this issue is common with this type of vehicle. We treat each situation on a case to case basis because not all issues have the same root causes. Chevrolet closely monitors all types of data in order to identify and address emerging vehicle concerns appropriately. Although currently there are no recalls or other types of field actions tied to your vehicle, which address the concern you are describing, please know that if a recall or other type of field action is launched to address the concern that you and others may be experiencing, Chevrolet will notify all involved, registered owners by mail. Letters will be mailed to all involved owners at the addresses that are on file at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), where vehicles are registered"

So, they aren't doing anything. If I cant get it fixed I plan to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General in my state. I also plan to reach out to my local news if this is not resolved. I encourage everyone with this issue to do the same, maybe it will get Chevy to do the right thing and repair this issue for free.

This happened twice on our vehicle. It happened again about 1.5 years after we had to replace the sifter assembly the first time. They know about this issue but wont cover it, though they did give us a big discount the second time it happened. it was the same dealership, so I am sure that helped.

Key gets stuck in the ignition randomly. It almost takes an act of congress to finally get it out. I can't leave the key in the ignition and I can't spend all day messing with this stupid thing. ANOTHER notch on this POS and its issues.

Twice in two days this problem kept me awake. I could turn the car on but could not get the key out of the ignition, thus draining the battery overnight. I could not drive to any place because I had to leave the key in the ignition. It would start great after a $352.00 new battery. Now one day later that battery is dead! This has happened twice in four years.

The key can't be removed from the ignition when the car is put in park. This started gradually around Jan 2017 and has been progressively getting worse. Normally, you have to run the car through all the gears several times and sometime restart the car to get the key to release. This is becoming more difficult and the last time it occurred we were unable to remove the key and had to take the car to the dealer.

Someone posted about their problem of the service traction control and radio going off. Everything this gentleman posted is me to a tee. My car will sometimes not start and the key is stuck in the lock position. After a few minutes all power will return and I can start my car as normal. This is starting to happen more and more. My boyfriend at first thought it was the battery and he went to wiggle the connectors to it and burned his finger the battery was that hot. We had the battery and alternator tested and both are completely fine. This problem needs to be resolved because I travel the interstates for work and if my car stalls while driving it could be deadly for me and anyone near me.

Captiva 3.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 94,000 miles

My Captiva has given me problems getting the key out for a couple months. Now the key is stuck in the Accessory position. Since it happened after business hours, my dash lights were on all night, and the battery is dead. I've owned this car for 18 months and it's been in the shop every other month practically.

The key being stuck in the ignition was really a pain, especially when I went shopping because I couldn't lock my doors. When I finally got the key out my nephew sprayed WD40 in the switch and it worked fine for awhile and then it started again and he would have to spray it again.
