I own two 1998 Chevrolet; one is a Blazer, the other an S-10 pick-up. The windshield wipers in both fail periodically. I see that Chevrolet issued a recall for this defect in 1998, but it only covers through 1997 models. Shouldn't this apply to my vehicles?
I've seen several recalls for windshield wiper failure/stoppage during rains, but not the the '98 Blazer. Mine works, but only when it's not raining. It fails regularly while in use. Any ideas ?
Front windshield wipers work fine if turned on at the first indication of rain. They continue to do so no matter how severe the rain. But when vehicle is stopped and ignition is turned off and the ignition is again turned on and it is still raining the windshield wipers on the front will not turn on.
1998 Chevy Blazer. Windshield wiper failure. The wipers only work when they feel like it. They often don't work when it's raining, or just stop by themselves. This is a very dangerous situation and should be recalled like the previous years have been.
While driving, in inclement weather, the windshield wipers failed to come on. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic placed the vehicle on a diagnostic machine, but the problem could not be duplicated.

After purchase from dealer we noticed the wipers would not stop in the off position but they worked full-time. About 5 months ago they proceeded to work intermitinly and we could sometimes get them started by raising the arms up and down manually and now they barely work at all. Last incident we were in a downpour and they won't come on at all even if we try moving the blades up and down with our hands.since that time, once again we can sometimes get them to move. This could cause an accident in our opinion.
The air bag light comes on intermittently because the air bag sensor is bad and needs to be replaced. Also, at 30,000 miles the windshield wiper turns on and off intermittently without being engaged. There is a recall on this issue for the early model year. The dealership refused to replace the wiper control module. Consumer took the vehicle for replacement of the air bag sensor, which they performed but the air bag is still inoperative.
As I was driving my 1998 Blazer my windshield wipers stopped working in the middle of a thunderstorm in upstate New York. I had no previous problems with them. Before they stopped working I had them on a continuous setting and they were not working properly. They acted as if they were set on intermittent. Luckily there were no other cars around me and I could safely pullover and wait out the storm. I took the car into the dealer and was told that older models were recalled for this exact same problem but mine was not.
10/10/2001 replaced the alternator - it was over charged and went bad! noticed several complaints about this too! 12/20/2001 windshield wipers stopped working in heavy rain. Then when motor turned off and on again they worked, this has been happening on and off since that time, but today 06/26/2004 they just stopped all together - nothing helped. Had to have the same soldering repair done as in the 1995 -1997 Chevrolet S-10 / Blazer - which I might add was a recall. The same parts are used in most 1998's as well. The recall needs to include all of the components, not just a few of them! also I have had several dash parts break loose - like the hatch door release / back wiper control is just sitting there - nothing holding it in. The passenger side seat recliner handle fell off - had it put back on at dealer - then it broke off. (makes being a passenger in my Blazer very uncomfortable) I have noticed several complaints about this too! the drivers outside door handle - one of the screws that holds it in place is not able to put back due to plastic is stripped- so the door handle wabbles. The heat from the sun has bowed up the front windsheild vent until it is cracked and broken now too. I have always driven Chevrolet's - but here latley with all of the plastic they are using - I am beginning to wonder if my money wouldn't be better spent in another make of vehicle. I love the design and ect. Of the Blazer - but the plastic is not holding up - this is some expensive plastic to be made so cheap. If you shut the doors hard at all the whole top of the arm rest pops up and has to be popped back in place.
Windshield wipers on 1998 Chevy Blazer again failed to work during a rain shower. Forced me to pull over to side of road to wait for rain to subside. I don't understand why this still is not a safety recall considering earlier model Blazer were recalled for the same exact problem.
1. driver and passenger seat recliner levers have broken over last few yrs, drivers side replaced 3 times, I had to pay 100. Deductible to fix each time. 2. fuel guage indicator showed fuel tank 1/'2 full, no gas in the tank, car stopped in a dark street in an unsafe part of town, had to pay $100. Deductible to fix, no warning lights to show gas empty, car just suddenly stopped. 3.rear trunk latch would not work, had to pay deductible for dealer to fix. 4. windshiield wiper mechanism stopped working, dealer replaced after we paid deductible. 5. currently there is a rubbing noise from the brake pedal when pedal depressed, car no longer under extended warranty, was brought to dealer's attn sev times before warrnty expired, dealer mech could find no problm.
While driving in inclement weather, the windshield wipers failed. The consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drove it to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic determined that the windshield wiper motor module needed to be replaced. There was a recall on other GM vehicle, however this year vehicle was not included.
Wipers work only when they want. Last 2 evenings, out of town, very late, middle of major storms...no wipers! happens all the time. But, when I want to wash my windshield...they work!
Daily, flasher unit continues to click with turn signals off. Under normal driving conditions, wipers fail to turn off on their own. Under wet driving conditions, windshield wipers fail completely. Have to use the mist or washer fluid function to get wipers to woprk when raining. After searching found that 1995 models were recalled for this same issue with the wipers.
1998 Chevrolet Blazer. Windshield wipers stopped working without warning. This is a major problem for us since we live in one of the snowy states. Very dangerous when driving in a snow storm and they quit working.
