My son has a 1996 GMC jimmy that has had the same problems. He has had to have his radiator removed and cleaned out twice and have the water pump replaced once. General Motors knows of this problem but has not issued a recall. There is a label in front of the radiator that states that the coolant does not require service for 100,000 miles. This coolant causes some of the engine components to rust ( ex. Heater nipple) someone at the dealership admitted that they see many vehicles every day with this problem.

Radiator plugged with rust and grit, causing car to overheat. Consumer told by dealer that the rust and grit could be due to a manufacturing error in which foundry core sand was left in the block after castings. Correction of problem not under warranty, but consumer wants Chevrolet to cover the cost of repairs.

I know of four other people with the same complaint of their vehicle radiator core being plugged. They were all serviced at shottenkirk's and upset about having to pay a cost of $294.09. I had previously had the same vehicle to shottenkirk's because of no heat and they put in a new thermostat. That did not solve the problem, and I had to pay $64 for the thermostat and labor. Besides taking two days off, driving sixty miles one way to shottenkirk's and having to pay for the services because the extended warranty would not cover the cost, I am a little upset with Chevrolet. I went thru the proper channels to give my complaints and this is where joel, from the executive office at General Motors instucted me to complain. It is not fair to the consumer to have to pay for a faulty core.

The inside of the radiator erupted and caused the transmission fluid and antifreeze to mix. This caused water to flow in the transmission. The radiator, resevoir and the transmission had to be replaced. The alternator had to be replaced due to this failure. I was traveling on I-95 when this incident happened with no warning. There must be a defect in the raditor to erupt inside, please investigate, if requested, I can provide repair bills.

Entire radiator system replaced, 4 mos later entire engine replaced, 7 days later, distributor replaced. No diagnosis for any of these problems. Closed dexcool radiator system was filled with black syrup and had no fluid but showed no signs of leaking!? engine lost power and sputtered prior to engine replacement(which may have been unneccessary!) and showed identical symptoms 7 days later, for which a distributor replacement fixed symtoms. Now my "service engine soon" light is on for my engine with 600 miles on it! I am getting a 3rd dealer's opinion today. Please help if you can.
