My 2006 Aveo began acting up in July of 2010. It has never been the same since...
It all began one day when my car would made a loud "knock" and jumped when I shifted into drive. This was the first time my engine light ever came on. Upon driving it, it had a hard time shifting into the various gears - one time on the highway I reached 4,500 RPM's while traveling 50 miles per hour. So, I took it in to your basic maintenance center have the transmission fluid checked and topped off. Of course when I left the light had been shut off.
The next day the phantom light was back again!! It began knocking and jumping every time my car shifted from first to second, and again from second to third gears. It never seemed to make it to fourth.... I brought it into a local repair shop this time. Of course I had to leave it overnight. When I got the call about it the next day they told me (to my utter surprise and amazement) that the car drove fine. They could not find a problem.
What a disaster! Luckily the place I took it did not charge me for a diagnosis... It was the next month after the process had occurred 3+ more times (the engine light on, the knocking, the failing to shift, and then mysteriously fixing itself) that I brought it to the Chevy dealer.
Chevy could not tell me what was wrong (the light was off when I brought it at first), and told me to bring it back when the light came on again. Grrreat. At this point I was convinced it was not transmission but electrical problems. When the light came on again I brought it in. They told me it MIGHT be my Electronic Control Module (ECM or TCM). But - it might not be.
$500 dollars, a new ECM and one week later - the light is back! I have had this problem for one full year now. The light usually comes on for about 2 days and is off for about 1-3 days. Oddly enough it did not happen all winter long, but sprang back up mid March as the days became warmer.
As of this week it has been smelling like hot oil and been leaking a small amount on the engine...
Being raised a Chevy lover/Ford hater this experience has been extremely disappointing. Seems the end is near! Just hope I can trade it in for scrap metal....
