There is a crack on dashboard on passenger side just above the cover for airbag. It is not a significant issue aesthetically, but it makes me wonder why and how that happen. However that could also be that the vehicle was parked outside entire February at temperatures below -25 celsius in Canada.

Avalanche LTZ 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

I bought my Avalanche used in 2013, $30,000 and it was in pristine condition with zero issues as far as I knew at that time. (I later found out the rear window defogger/deicer didn't work and still doesn't). About 1 1/2 years later I noticed a crack begin developing at the upper left corner of the passenger side air bag. Since then it has broken completely in half in that spot. I need to add that I am pretty gentle on my vehicles and do not hit holes or speed bumps in any way hard.

Aside from that, my Avalanche is always garage kept, so it's not as if it sits out in hot sun all the time. This dash issue drives me mad to say the least, because it vibrates and bounces with very little cause. I discovered this site while online looking for a replacement dash, to remedy this problem. It's astonishing to find that it's such a huge problem for so many and GM is so uncaring. I would love to see GM step up and accept this issue as a design flaw, and recall them and replace them with a reinforced upgrade, at no cost to the many of us suffering from the problem. I see it as a devaluing flaw to the vehicle as well as the safety concern that pieces could fly in the face of anyone occupying it in the event of a crash.

This dash issue along with a couple of other annoying little things are making me consider other makes for my future truck purchases.

cracked dashboard

I have a 2010 Chevy Avalanche LTZ ($50k +) and have the damn dash cracks in all the infamous places as all the other hundreds of thousands unsatisfied "most likely" highly loyal Chevy and GMC owners scattered across the web. It started out as a baby little crack just above the cluster hump, one by the center dash speaker, and the passenger airbag. A month later the center (Bose) dash speaker literally fell through my dash. The cluster hump crack has become a gaping channel and the airbag crack is the same. I returned to the dealer in which I bought the vehicle, they stated I am out of warranty and they are a Dodge Dealer "sorry man nothing we can do". Took it to a Chevy dealer they said they wanted $1300 plus labor (not going to happen)

I went back to the Dodge Dealership where I bought the vehicle and told them a purchased a ABS plastic dash cover and wanted reimbursement for it...after months of dealing with them they refunded me the $264. Although this has helped the appearance aspect of my problem the vibrating, rattling, and squeaking sound the dash creates is horrendous and a huge distraction. Let's not forget the safety issue the flying plastic showered upon us if we should so happen as to have an accident. (Good thing it's " no safety concern" says the Chevy customer service). I know I am out of warranty ....HOWEVER this is a RECALL issue why will it not be addressed as such.

This is the last Chevy/GMC I will ever own, I have contacted multiple customer service agents, dealerships and now corporate office in this matter. I have a case number 8-2402927942 and still NOTHING ...I believe this is just to make me think they give a Sh*t about how much money we spent on their inferior product. I am just hoping someone who cares reads this and at least offers me a chance to fix my dash at the $100 deductible rate others have paid. I will save my issue with the Autoride for another complaint.

The dashboard is completely cracked now, I am afraid that the crack next to the passenger airbag will cause it to deploy. Rattles a lot and that is because I protect it from the sun. Don't understand why this happened.

The dashboard started cracking and every time I'd hit a bump or the truck bounced, it got worse and worse. It goes almost all the way across the entire dash now. It seems there is no support underneath. I fear a piece of paper or something will fall inside and catch on fire if it gets hot. There would be no way to retrieve it. I don't know what other dangers this could create.

I love our 2010 Avalanche. In fact, we have a 2003 as well and loved it so much we bought this one. However, this has the "cracked dash" problem. Noticed it not too long after we purchased it last year when we were looking for whatever was causing the rattling and noted what we thought to be a seam in the dash. We've not checked with our Chevy dealer yet but in reading the other reports, seems as though that would be a waste of time and effort.

We'd like to have it repaired or find out how it could be repaired as we are concerned that the airbags might not work and if it continues to lengthen and spreads to what has now become three cracks (which it has since we purchased it) that soon it will completely break as one of the cracks is moving towards the speedometer housing. If anyone has any suggestions we would appreciate advise.

Love the truck. Completely pissed off at GM and the dealerships unwillingness to address what appears to be a material defect...

If your curious as to how wide spread this is just search the internet... Here is a link to a petition if others are interested...

cracked dashboard

Counting all the bells and whistles this truck had when it was brand new cost $50K. It has had its share of leaking rear panels and usual avalanche things, i.e. gas cap and emission problems. But on Sept. 1, 2014, I was caught in a very heavy rainstorm and was just sitting in the truck waiting out the rain. Doing that, allowed me to check around because the wife just had a stroke a year ago and this is the truck we use for her. I looked at the dash right side and noticed a lifting of the dash panel just at the upper left corner of the air bag deployment capsule. At first glance I just thought it was a seam because the dash is black and I know sun may create movements. But as I pushed down on the "crack" I definitely determined it indeed was one.

I have extended warranty on the truck until Oct. 2016 or 72K miles. Currently have 55.7K so I thought to take it in to the dealer I purchased it from. They actually laughed at my complaint and said "too bad" because this is considered trim.

I asked the service writer to assure me that the airbag would deploy in spite of this crack and she said yes. I wanted that in writing but could not get that from her.

The service writer said I should call my extended warranty folks about it. But I asked then, if you say they won't cover it why should I waste my time calling? No answer. But she gave me the number 800-222-1020 which I did call on my way home. It was a direct line to GM and 15 minutes of waiting and I still got no answer, nor was offered a chance by recording a call back number. Extremely frustrating.

I have been a loyal GM customer since 1972. But with all these problems with GM and my own ones with one of their vehicles, it is doubtful to say the least that another GM product of any kind will be in my future.

It also comes as no surprise that GM has "decided" to discontinue with the manufacturing of new Avalanches. Yeah.....imagine that.

Update from Sep 9, 2014: I am adding an image of another avalanche dashboard crack. I haven't taken a photo of mine yet, but this picture I am attaching to this complaint is an exact crack as on my avalanche.

There seems to be a broken clasp that holds the 2 panels of the dashboard together. The panel that holds the dash speaker shakes up and down while I'm driving, causing the rattling noise. It is not a present danger, but is very, very annoying.

I hit a pot hole and it wasn't a big pothole by any means, when I did the dashboard cracked all the way across. Took it to dealership where I purchased it and was told that becaused I had never had the vehicle in question in there service department for any kind of service they would not be helping us. The dealership is in Houston, Texas. I live in Humble, TX & to drive to the dealership would be over a 1 hour drive from where I live, it is much easier and convenient to take it in locally.

I have sent a complaint to Chevrolet's corporate office. I guess we will wait and see if the offer any help, but I won't be holding my breath.

The estimate to get this fixed is over $1,000. I have since found out that my boss and a close friend of mine had the same thing happen to their Avalanches'. It would be interesting to know how many other people have had this problem and if they tried to fight it.
