The joke continues. The personnel at Matthews stated usually by now Chevrolet replaces the engine at no charge or they offer a very attractive buy out of the vehicle towards a new one. But the story changed again and this new fix was Chevrolet's guarantee that the problem would go away completely. This turned out to be another "snow job" story to make sure the vehicle was way beyond the 100,000 mile warranty so they wouldn't have to honor their written warranty.

When I took the truck in for service on 3/11/11, they confirmed that the oil was down a great amount. They told me to do mileage/oil usage work sheet every time I filled up with gas for 3000 miles. Then they made me an appointment to come in for repairs on 4/25/11. Was able to pick up truck on 5/6/11. The mileage from 3/11/11 to 4/25/11 went up to 103235. They (Matthews Chevrolet service personnel) that everything would be totally covered (all labor and all parts) under the original warranty of 100,000 miles since this was an on going problem and Chevrolet was aware of the situation.

Avalanche LTZ 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 30,000 miles

Like others with 2007 5.3L engine, my Avalanche starting going through oil at an average of one quart every 1,100 miles at about 30,000 miles. The dealer told me "normal" oil consumption was up to one quart every 1,800 miles. After monitoring it for oil consumption, they added the oil deflector and it decreased oil consumption to a quart every 2,000 miles for about 6,000 miles. I am back to one quart every 1,100 miles. It rolled 103,000 miles today and there has been a noticeable engine tick for at least 50,000 miles. The dealer is unwilling to do any other repairs. I previously owned a 2004 Avalanche and never added a quart of oil in 80,000 miles before trading it for the "new and improved" 2007 model. Other than the oil consumption issue and the lousy 12 mpg average fuel economy, it has been a good vehicle.

Avalanche LT 5.3L

  • 65,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I have a 2007 Chevy Avalanche with 65,000 miles on it now. I took it in at 38,000 miles when I started noticing that it was burning oil and the oil light was coming on at anywhere between 1500 & 2500 miles after my oil change. The dealership took a look at it and said that I needed to do an oil consumption test. Well I did that, they told me that the factory didn't put on an oil deflector, and that this would fix my problem. So I had them (under warranty) install the oil deflector. Sure enough, that didn't fix it. So I took it back in, and i was told that I would have to do another oil consumption test. So I did that. After the service manager told me that he had never heard of this engine having this problem, I ended up talking with another service manager (great guy actually). I was told that GM wouldn't do any work on an engine that wasn't burning 2.5 quarts every 2500 miles. That was the threshold. Ridiculous. So after a little help, and mentioning the "tick" that I had been hearing, they are replacing everything in my engine except the block and camshaft (literally everything but those two things). Turns out that there is a problem with the installation of the piston rings. They didn't offset the rings by 180 degrees at the factory, thus oil goes straight into the cylinder. This ends up seizing the rings, and essentially destroying the engine. While I was in the shop, one of the techs showed me a 08' with the exact same problem, and mentioned that this is a common issue with these motors that have a "tick". Had I not mentioned the "tick", the dealership wouldn't have been able to do anything for something that is clearly a warranty issue. I wish GM would have stepped up, recognized this as a problem, and fixed it without me having to go thru two years of pain, consumption tests, arguing with the dealership, and getting 12-13 mpg. Makes me want to look at a Ford....ok I didn't mean that....

I bought the vehicle new and ever since I've owned it it burns a quart of oil every 1,200 miles and the dealer tells me this is normal. I've owned many cars and never had one that burns this much oil. I have had the car back to the dealer over 10 times and they say there is nothing wrong. I'm sure when the warranty runs out they will find the problem and want $2 or $3 thousand dollars to fix it. All I get is the run around from the dealer. Meghan L Ft Myers Fl.

Avalanche LS V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

I bought the truck used from a local dealer. It had 30,000 on it then. At 35,000 miles the transmission blew up. Which they said was "normal" for the Avalanche. It took 4 days to have that fixed. Then the gears in the rear end went out at 40,000 miles. So there was another 2 days. Then at 60,000 the engine started using 2 qts of oil between changes. Then the engine, on acceleration, would surge and chug. I took it to the dealer. They said it was a factory defect, I was the first one to come in and complain about it, and that it was going to take a couple of days to put some kind of deflector shield in it to keep oil from getting into the cylinders and fowling out my plugs. I too had problems with a loaner car because they only give you one if the repair last more then a day. Well the drop off date doesn't count and on the second day that it should have been done it wasn't. It then went into the third day with no loaner. The GM loaner program is a real joke! Afterward the truck was fine for 40,000 more miles.. Now it is right back to using 2 qts of oil every 3,000 miles. I have had this truck in more times for repairs then any truck I have ever owned. I use to be a Chevy guy all the way. I'm ready to trade this piece of junk in on a Dodge.

I bought the truck used with 77,000 miles. The truck ran great for the first 5,000 miles. Then the oil light came on. The truck was down 3 quarts of oil. I took the truck to Matthews Chevrolet service department in Vestal, NY. The service personnel said they had to contact their help desk for the proper fix. They(service personnel) said they had a sure fix to correct the problem. They did the oil pan repair and assured me the problem was totally fixed. Well guess what, now the truck was eating more oil than before.

It is absolutely unbelievable that a car with fewer than 50,000 miles on it has an oil consumption problem!! At 17,000 there was a problem internally with the engine and they had to crack the original factory seal...it's been down hill ever since! Every Chevy we have owned has had a problem. Avalanche LTZ 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

My 2007 Chevy Avalanche got a low oil warning notice starting around around 40,000 miles. I've been taking it for regular service and just doing normal highway driving. The oil was at the very bottom of the dipstick.

I figured maybe my last service put in the wrong amount of oil. No other new vehicle I had needed me to add oil between service.

Since that point, the low oil warning happens every few months of normal commuting. The "oil life" indicator (that estimates oil life) show like 60% oil life yet when it's low on oil. So, I've been pretty certain there's an oil consumption problem with the engine.

The Chevy service center told me several times nothing is wrong, and this is totally what's expected, and I just need to be super diligent about getting frequent service.

But on my last visit the service representative told me he has heard people having problems, but that Chevy won't let them fix the problem until the oil consumption is outside the "acceptable range". And I basically have to wait until the problem gets much worse.

I've seen through Google searches that 2007 Avalanche engines do seem to have some kind of widespread problem with oil consumption, and oil fouling other critical components. I'm not sure what I can do to get this fixed. I'm wondering if I should find a non-Chevy engine specialist to diagnose what's wrong.

THIS OIL CONSUMPTION STUFF IS RIDICULOUS!!! I take my Avalance in 5 times for them to do the oil consumption test only to find out it has the same problem everyone else seems to have. I then take the vehicle in for what they say will be 2-3 days for the repair. They say the loaner car would be covered by GM's factory warranty, so no problem. Well, on the second day after not being able to get the service advisor to return my calls, I go to the dealership. They inform me the truck is ready and that all they had to do was replace a gasket. That took 2 days? They let me know it does not and it was actually ready on the first day within 4 hours of dropping it off. Since that is the case- GM would not cover the 2 days of loaner car. Really?!?!?! Why did I not just wait for the fix then? Why did your service advisor tell me it was a 2-3 day fix and was major, then it was a few hours? BUT- 30 minutes after leaving the low oil light and engine service light pop on. Yup- they fixed nothing with their stupid gasket!

I am not talking to Chevrolet Customer No-Service to help with the situation. I cannot keep going to these idiots over and over with no repair in sight!

Avalanche LT2 5.3L

I had a 2004 Silverado with a 4.8 liter engine. It used a quart of oil every 2000 miles and foweled the # 8 spark plug 3 times in 42000 miles.I Traded it in last November and got a good deal on an 07 Avalanche with 39000 miles on it with a 5.3 liter engine.Due to the fact that the other chevy burned oil from the tim it was new I expected some oil consumption. To my surprise,at 1100 miles my add oil light came on.I added a quart thinking that the dealer may have shoet filled it when they serviced it.This surficed untill a 3000 mile oil change,After the oil change, sure enough at 1100 miles the light came on again.I added another quart.I re-checked the oil at 1000 miles and it was down another quart.

I am wondering what damage this could be doing to the engine.I'm glad the power train is covered for 5 years.I'm also glad I purchased the extended bumper to bumper out 3 more years,Unless they come up with a solution to this oil consumption problem,I wont be keeping it beyond that.

Update from Dec 21, 2010: I have started the process of having the dealer change and check my oil. They told me right off the bat that a quart of oil every 2000 miles is normal consumption and will not admit that there is a problem with the 2007 engines. What a crock.Just look at this web site and read the complaints.I'm curious if the 2008-2010 engines are better. If so then they did something to fix the problem and know damn well what the problem is.My next vehicle will not be a GM if they don't fix this!

Update from Jan 17, 2011: i brought the truck in at 800 miles. It was down 1/2 quart. They sent me on my way.Brought it in at 12,400 miles because the add oil light came on.They added a quart of oil and sent me on my way(with documentation),I aked what's next. They told me they will check for any new service bullitans and will re-check the oil in another 1000 miles. What a pain.

Avalanche LT 5.3L V8

I have been working with Rick Hendrick Chevrolet in Buford Ga, trying to get my 2007 Avalanche oil consumption problem resolved and they have been as helpful as they can, and still be in coordination with GM,

I have had my 07 Avalanche in about 5 times doing oil consumption tests to try to figure out why we are burning 1.5 to 2 quarts of oil in approx. 2,800 miles. In doing the oil consumption test we were losing anywhere from a 1/4 quart to a 1/2 quart within 1,000 mile intervals, the problem is the oil does not get consumed as fast until is it partially worn out and broken down. Thus they are saying we have no issue and its in accordance with GM standards of 1 qt every 2,000 miles, but they have never checked it out at the 2,000 mile mark to verify this either, and that is far from standard that I have ever heard of, I had a 96 Tahoe that only burned about 1/2 quart every 3,500 miles with 200k + miles, I was at 60,000 miles and 2,800 miles on my oil change and approx. 60% remaining on my oil life indicator when this first happened. They have informed me that ZMAX might be the way to go, but this seems way more serious than any ZMAX formula is going to be able to tackle.

In short I have contacted Chevrolet with the issue and have the Rick Hendrick shop foreman working on the issue with me(Thanks)l. We really have not got anywhere, but he said a permanent fix was on the horizon, and he mentioned about a buffer on the inside of the engine cover i just would rather not have my vehicles engine subject to this stress while GM figure out a fix. We also have the issue of a 100K warranty on the power train, I guess this is non issue as long as we are in the so called oil consumption range. This truck has a problem, but we are still in the who knows stage of what going to happen

I am a every 3,000 mile oil change person because $600 a month for 4 years in no joke. If anyone knows anything that might help please send me some information. I have the same issue as everyone else on this screen. This is not normal for a vehicle to consume this much oil, i'm positive about that and if this was their 40,000 vehicle im sure they would have a different outlook on the situation as well.

It is APRIL 2010 and its still using oil. We are monitoring it every 800-1,000 miles to make sure that there is still a oil problem. Was using Synthetic, Chevy said Engines not made to run on Synthetic, they wanted to perform the oil change this time and then monitor. Notice 2500 miles into an oil change oil light came on saying low and it was down 11/2qts the first time and then 2qts the second time after next oil change. Was told vehicle burning too much oil and called Chevy...... They claim two engines made this year one with a baffling system and one with out causing the rings to get sticky, clogged and burning the residue

SO we now monitor for the next 800 or so miles while Chevy make up its mind what to do next Was told fix is covered under warranty...........,

LETS WATCH CHEVY and Wait and see ..is a recall in progress

Good Luck everyone, I think we are gonna need it. Hoping they can fix the problem for the rest of the people out there. and ME!!

My 2007 Chev. Avalanche is using over 2 qts. of oil every 2500 miles. I had the Dealership run there oil consumption test also. The first test I drove my truck about 1500 miles and dropped it off to the dealership to check it .They called me and told me it was done.I asked , so what was the results. She told me we replaced some push pins and it will cost you $13. I asked what push pins? She replied the little plastic pins that hold your under spoiler on. I asked her, what about the oil test? She said, just drive it about 2000 miles and bring it in, we put die in to have it tested. I told her, I JUST DID THAT! She hesitated a minute and put me on hold, she got back on the phone and told me that someone had put my paperwork in the done pile.I asked her again,so what was the results? She said Oh it was fine.I told her that you didn't even check it, you thought I was bringing it in for the test. She admitted yes,and said that we could do the test again. Not happy about this at ALL. I redid the test and took it to my oil change place first and had them document that it was 2 qts.low with metal shavings in the oil. I took this paper work to the dealership, and they came up with the same ,over 2 qts.low in 2500 mile. They told me we need to get a car for you to drive, so we can tare down your motor to see what the problem is. Two weeks later, they put me in a loaner car. A week later I called to see what they may have found. I was told that they haven't even started my truck. Their mechanic had quit and the other mechanic was on vacation. Another week in my loaner car still, they called to tell me that they will start my truck on Monday. A week from then they called to tell me you can pick up your truck. I asked so what did you do, I still can't believe her answer to me. She said we took your motor apart, heads spark plugs, piston.ect.and put it back together. She told me that we didn't fix anything yet. I am told that I can pick my truck up on Monday unfixed and that the part that is needed to fix it isn't going to be made till this summer. I asked her what part are you talking about? She's not sure what it is. Now I"m reluctant to get my truck back. I"m afraid they might have used push pins to put my motor back together, and who took it apart and put it back together, the new GUY. May be the oil change guys since they deal with oil. My wife and I have discussed just not picking it up and keeping the loaner till GM figures out that the rental cost of my loaner will exceed the cost of replacing the dam motor! The dealership was kind enough to tell me that they charge GM more money than the consumers per hour to do repairs. If this is how you honor your 5Yr.100,000 mile warranty that you keep bragging about on TV.Mr.CEO of GM maybe a little news story on how all of us satisfied customers are dealing with keeping are vehicles LUBED EVERY OTHER WEEK! ,will give you a boost in your sales come back!!!

Our truck is using oil. We have been through the GM oil watch program and was told nothing is wrong. Last week we were told the truck does have a problem, duh!

Hear it is. If your VIN# falls between a certain time frame the engine has defective pistons and rings. The dealer has ordered the parts to fix but I dont feel good about the engine being tore down completely. Are they going to hone the block over size? or just stick in the pistons and hope for the best? Is any one there really trained for this?

I have worked in the engine field for 25years and am a GM supplier for the last 10years. I have seen some of these dealer returned engines and it is scary. I am going to at least try for a replacement engine to keep the human error to a min. This is my 3rd new truck and I think my last. I think I will buy used low milage after all the complaints are out. Wish me luck and I hope this helps you with the same problem get some satifaction.
