CarComplaints.com Notes: It didn't take long for the cladding to fade, discolor, and in some cases crack. Cladding is the protective plastic piece that runs along the outside of vehicles, and exposure to both heat and UV rays give the Avalanche's cladding a chalky, faded appearance.

Owners have said the problem is especially bad on the panels near the cargo bed. Eventually, GM agreed to a one-time treatment of ArmorDillo, a protective treatment similar to what you find in any auto shop. Unfortunately, that would only help for 6 months (on average).

Eventually, GM offered another coating solution for owners within the 3 year / 36,000 mile original warranty under TSB:04-08-111-001C.

Avalanche

  • 66,650 miles
Was driving and came to stop, my speedometer did not zero out. When I started to go it continued from where it was. I did not really know how fast I was going. Several stops and each time it did not zero. To get it zeroed I had to shut off engine and restart several times until it zeroed out. It has occurred several times this brings excessive wear and tear on the starter and battery. It could also be a very dangerous situation as you really have no clue on your correct speed. I have a 2005 Chevy Avalanche that I am the original owner and have recently had a problem with the speedometer not working correctly. Some days it works fine and other days it doesn't work or the speed is all over the place. I have heard this has been an issue on previous year models and GM has not done a recall. No one can tell me exactly what the problem is and I don't want to waste money trying to figure it out. This is obviously a problem GM has known about and will not address. This is also a safety issue that GM needs to rectify asap! any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your assistance in this matter, regards, Mr. Anthony trapino

Speedometer has stopped working properly. It may not move at all or it may tell me I am going 120 mph. I know of several other Avalanche owners that have had or are having the save problem. The vehicle has less than 47,000 miles. I spoke to the dealer and was told there is a recall on older models, but not on my 05.

I was driving down the road and realized that my odometer was not working properly.. it was registering that I was going 120 mph, in a 35, I knew that was wrong...all the other gauges are working well. I now recorded 120 mph or sometimes it will record between 75 and 90. I haven't corrected it.. I'm waiting for GMC do something. Or until the inspection sticker expires

  • 44,000 miles
Speedometer needle was tacky last week while driving in town around 45-50 mph. I watched the gauge and the problem seemed to have corrected itself. Yesterday, the speedometer completely went crazy while I was driving, quit working at 25 mph, and when I slowed down, the needle went below the mph gauge line and is now pointing straight down, blocking my view of the gear shift panel on the instrument cluster. I have 44,000 miles or so on this vehicle and just bought it used two weeks ago.

I own a 2005 Chevy Avalanche which I bought last June 2007 from a private party and I noticed that last septermber 2007 as I was driving on the street, I noticed that my speedometer was reading 110 and I was only going at 25mph. I wish to know what to do and I have not yet fixed my truck due to the fact that fixing my truck is over $1,000 dollars. Is there anyway I can fix my truck w/O paying anything?

My speedometer begin skipping on my 05 Chevy Avalanche when I was driving. It did this for about a week or so. Then it started showing that I was doing 20-mph faster than I was actually going. When I would stop, it would still indicate I was going 20-40mpn. Finally, on Feb 4th, it got stuck at over 120 mph. So now I no longer have a working speedometer.
