Purchased 2003 Avalanche in 2007 and after a few months things started going. First smoke from under dashboard enough to choke on and the smell was wicked. A person stopped behind me, ran up and shut vehicle off and extinguished under dash. Towed vehicle to garage that had no computer tool so he looked under dash and pulled out a few burnt wires.
Two weeks later I tried playing and testing different wires to heater and bang it. I hit the right connection so it still works on high # 5 no lower numbers, but the worse thing was having smoke smell cleaned from vehicle $ 284.93 dollars later it was breathable again just needed to keep spraying smokeless deodorant.
