CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002 Chevy Astro Van has a solid reputation with very low complaint rates. The only problem now is finding one with low miles.
Not only is the 2002 Astro Van reliable, but since they were built on a truck powertrain, they can tow 5,500/5,000 lbs (RWD/AWD) -- almost double what other minivans can.
The Chevy Astro is mechanically identical to the GMC Safari.
Intermittent starting problem started in 2010, we noticed when there was high humidity wouldn't start, repair man would come to our house it would start right off. He replaced fuel pump first then when it kept happening the rotor was replaced. Didn't have any problems for several months, now same problem is starting all over again. This is the best vehicle to be driving in snowy conditions since it is AWD, our other vehicle with FWD is the pits in ice and snow. Would like to find a permanent fix for this problem.
Every so often it fails to start, particularly when cold. 99% of the time it starts fine. Every once in awhile you go out in the morning (time of year is irrelevant) and it cranks and cranks and will not start. Soon you can smell the fuel of a flooded engine. Letting it sit for 24 hours most of the time it will start. Have replaced coolant sensor, plugs, rotor, dist. cap.
