CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2001 Chevy Astro Van has a solid reputation with very low complaint rates. The only problem now is finding one with low miles.
Not only is the 2001 Astro Van reliable, but since they were built on a truck powertrain, they can tow 5,500/5,000 lbs (RWD/AWD) -- almost double what other minivans can.
The Chevy Astro is mechanically identical to the GMC Safari.
My dash trouble lights keep coming on then going off, but other than annoying, I have yet to have any actual problems. First it was the SECURITY light. A few days later the AIR BAG light came on and has stayed on.
In the last few weeks the BATTERY symbol & OUT OF GAS light will come on for a few seconds while the gas gauge needle drops to empty. I always have plenty of gas. The van still runs fine when these lights appear. In seconds everything is back to normal. Today BATTERY symbol came on & the gauge showed low voltage for about 25 miles, then suddenly sprang back to normal for a few minutes before going back down. When I stopped & turned off the van, it would not start again indicating the battery was very low. I'm getting ready to retire soon, but until then have to drive 60 plus miles for work every day.
