I discovered a wet carpet in my trunk about 1-1/2 yrs ago. Thought trunk had a slight leak. Put towels in to dry up. Problem continued if car sat in the rain or went through a carwash. Finally, I had my son look into this. He took out the soaked carpet and took off the cover for the spare tire compartment. There to my horror was my spare tire setting in about 4-5 inches of water. I scooped out the water and my son checked on line to see if others had this problem. Someone had suggested (on line) to cover the holes down behind or below the rear taillights, where the factory seals had failed, with a very strong tape. My son used Gorilla tape to cover the holes. I hope this works. I took the carpet out and dried it outside in the sun. Yes, there was the smell of mold/mildew and some rust. The original plugs for the holes were curled and out of shape.
