Around 170,000 miles I noticed an odd rhythmic sound coming from the engine bay. I had my mechanic check it out and he said the harmonic balancer was going out. I have found that this is a common problem on the Pre-Series I 3800s after 150,000 miles. Because I noticed it early I didn't have to worry about slinging the belt.
