Last night I rear-ended another car. I did a significant amount of damage to their car as well as my own. The whole front end will need replaced, definitely from the windshield back as I smashed in the grill, buckled the hood and both fenders, and not to mention all the fluids drained from underneath my hood and the car was not drivable. The engine would not go into gear and started screaming so I turned it off and called for a tow. Like other BMW owners, my airbags DID NOT deploy.
I am a bit stiff but okay and the other driver complained of a neck injury. I don't know whether to be happy about it not deploying because I am 4'10" and sit very close to the steering wheel or whether I should be upset because they didn't because the whole purpose of an airbag is to save a life and especially one sitting so close to the windshield. I've read many forums that other years and styles of BMW's have had trouble with airbags not deploying and have been through recalls. I just wanted to share my experience so that others know it might be all BMWs that suffer with this malfunction. I'm not an expert and can not diagnose this but from the testimonies I have read, all except the new X8 have had some trouble in this area. Good luck!
