We left (wife and two kids) to take our kids to school and some errands. We were driving on a rural road at about 65mph, clear day, no rain, about 65 degrees when suddenly the sunroof exploded. We though something had fallen in but there was nothing in the vehicle except shattered glass. We stopped at a gas station to inspect further and shake off the glass shards that got on us. No external damage found but that's when we noticed the glass protruding outward.
Called the dealership and they said they had never had a customer with that issue - so they would not replace it under warranty.
Called my insurance and they promptly set me up with a repair. My deductible is $500 so that's not bad for something I'm sure costs in the thousands to replace.
This however could have been worse. Could have had glass shards in our eyes, could have been raining, etc.
I will follow with BMW warranty department to inquire about this instead of the dealership.
Update from Oct 6, 2021: Sunroof was replaced and covered by insurance.
