The diesel X5 randomly shut off and would not start leaving my wife stranded on the highway. This left my wife without power steering or power brakes. It was acting a little weird a day or so before the issue, but only displayed a generic powertrain warning without storing any ECM codes to assist with diagnosis. After the engine died, the engine stored a low fuel pressure code. The Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pump failed just outside of the warranty period. Initial repair estimates are greater than $10,000 due to the way the high pressure fuel pump fails.

I purchased a 2014 BMW X5 on 8/31 Took possession of it 9/7 because the dealership needed to replace tires. On 9/15 while driving for about 3 minutes, the powertrain warning came on my screen and the truck began to shake. I turned around and parked in my driveway and turned the vehicle off. At which time smoke was visible from the engine area. As the smoke began to worsen, flames shot out and I called the fire department for help. I was only in possession of the vehicle for 8 days and the dealership told me that there-??s nothing that they can do for me. I was within the 15 day of possession or 500 mile time window

The timing chain malfunctioned and blew out the electronic fuel pump which cause a catastrophic failure of the vehicle. It went in to low power mode came top a stop with a "drivetrain malfunction" warning. Once the car locked in park it was inoperable. I am being quoted by BMW repair $48,000 for a new engine and a new fuel system. This is a well known issue over many years with BMW. There have been class action suits in Europe on this issue.

Driving the for 18 miles up a mountain road to a sky resort on snow covered road. Never exceeded 20 mph because of conditions. During the trip the brake system light came on and screen said use caution. Parked the car at the parking lot, turned it off. Turned it back on and it seemed ok, the error message was gone. Went to our room. 20 minutes later the sheriff calls and said my car is on fire. It was a total loss.

On the night of May 5th, 2017, while I was driving my 2014 BMW X5, at the mileage of 6800 miles. A burning smell came out first. 2 minutes after the smoke came out. I asked my kids get out of the car. Another 2 minutes later, the fire came out from the bottom of the engine. The fire was too big then we called seattle fire department to extinguish it. So far, geico said this car is totaled. But BMW North America did not pay too much care with this accident. Just saying the primarily responsibility is geico despite I keep to reminder her "my car is under warranty". as of today, I have heard nothing from BMW North America telling what to do for me. Geico rent a temp car for me.
