My wife and I, with a couple of friends were headed down to San Diego Saturday morning. I was driving on the 405 running about 65-70 mph on the fast lane- when all of sudden I felt the lost of power/acceleration even as I am trying to press on the accelerator. The dash display showed a symbol of a valve and says something like "engine malfunction, engine operating at reduced output. Have the system checked by the nearest BMW center"
In a matter of seconds I was going from about 70 to 25 mph and still losing power. I managed to get on the slowest lane before he engine totally lost its power and died. I called BMW assist while I was on the right shoulder, but it was too unsafe so I tried to restart it and managed to drive the car off the freeway - running at very low power -into a parking lot. We called BMW assist again- checked on the nearest dealership and got it towed there. I asked the dealership if they know of any similar instance of this incident but they said they haven't. My friend found this site and fwd me this info.
I am thankful that it did not cause an accident, although there is a very good chance it could have-it is very disappointing to have your newer, supposedly "most reliable vehicle" had almost caused us to be in an accident. I'm still waiting for a call back from their Service Dept.
I saw nine complaints of this sort in this website- appreciate if you could share the cause/repair and probability of it happening again. Thanks-
