We purchased a 2014 BMW X3 in late 2017. I did some research and did not find anything on the defective timing chain guides. Had I known about this we would not have purchased the vehicle or would have purchased an extended warranty. When we started getting low oil pressure warnings we took the vehicle to BMW after about an hour of diagnostics we were informed that they were pretty sure the chain guide had failed and estimated repair would be around $7,000.
After reading other complaints and found this issue went back to the 2012 and 2013 models, and BMW had increased the warranty to 7yrs or 70,000 miles. That's a nice, but seems like most failures are around 80,000 miles. Ours failed at 83,000. We contacted BMW of north America to see if they could help us in any way with these cost, and they stated unless they extend the warrant beyond the 70,000 they could not help us. We are contemplating having BMW do the repairs or taking to reputable local shop. However we are retired and really can't afford this repair. I guess we really could not afford this kind of quality.
