This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Received an error message: Transmission. Use parking break to prevent rolling. Dealership said it was the internal gear shift. It didn-??t recognize the vehicle was in park. It was an expensive repair because they had to remove the console to fix. Was told it was an issue with my model.
My BMW X1 started to display a message on the screen that says "Secure vehicle against rolling". I had it looked at and the diagnoses came back that there is a faulty spring inside the shifter that needs to be replaced. After some research, I have found this is happening to MANY BMW's. At this point, it does not seem like it is effecting the functioning of my shifter but I am not sure what the long term repercussions are. This message has been displayed every time I turn the car on for the past year. I was quoted over $2000 for BMW to repair this issue. I refuse to spend the money on an issue that should be a recall if it effects a large number of BMW's.
The sunroof shade is a common failure point on these cars that-??s not being addressed. A quick internet search provides hundreds of reports of the same with the 2016+ vehicles. While it may seem harmless, my 3 year old constantly had the sun beating on the top of his head, especially in the hot summer sun. I had to pay somebody to install 5% tint on the glass because the sun was enough to give his skin a light sunburn. BMW wants $2500 to fix what-??s obviously a defect.

I saw there was a recall for the sunroof for my type of vehicle, sunroof components do not open when I press to open it. Cloth of sunroof got stuck and is now broken.
I am seeing this error while getting in the parked vehicle -'Secure Vehicle against rolling' in the odometer display and in the dashboard display - 'Secure Vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center'.
The sunroof shadescreen failed to close: it is a safety issue because it is impossible to close the shade anymore and the sun is hitting your head and eyes all the time: when I first noticed it I was driving and a sound came from the sun roof and if I looked it would have been a crash. Taking to the dealership iwould cost 2000 dollars to replace. It is a manufacturer defect that that something that is used so infrequently fails so easily. To be honest we have probably used it only a couple dozen times since we have the car and I can-??t believe it would fail so easily. I also read on forums that this happened to a lot of other car owners who are complaining about the same issue so it is something that the manufacturer should cover:
Sun shade mechanism will not open, causing the sun shade to tear. Seems that sun shade is off the track, or hung and will not allow for closure on this BMW
Only had car 2 months and door handle locking system does not work. When I use key door locks and unlock. I touch handle the doors will unlock but if I touch handle to lock. It doesnt work
When I extend the passenger seat all the way to the back, the fuse blows up. There are sparks under the seat. After that all the buttons towards passenger seat are not responsive. I took it to the dealer same day and they fixed it on the same day by replacing the fuse. As soon as I got the car, I tried extending the seat and fuse blows up again. The dealer took it for 2 weeks, checks it and just returns it saying the faulty wire has been trimmed and advised me not to adjust the seat. They did not give me any permanent solution. When I contacted BMW customer service regarding this matter, I got the same response advising me not to adjust the seat. I was told that this is a very common issue. It had 24K miles when this happened. The issue is not resolved as of today.
The hands-free mechanism/actuator for opening and closing the tailgate (making a kicking motion with the foot) activates unintentionally when loading and unloading items from the rear storage area. On four (4) occasions while loading or unloading from the rear storage area, the open tailgate door has closed (without being intentionally activated by me) and come down onto my head. While there is a brief warning sound, the tailgate comes down very quickly on my head and does not stop when it makes contact with my head. Even when I am just standing with my foot near or under the rear bumper the tailgate closes on my head without me initiating the designed trigger mechanism (simulated kicking of the foot.). there are no "user settings" available to disable this automatic operation. While I am an adult, a young child could inadvertently activate the closing of the tailgate and there head/neck could be caught.
