BMW cheaped out on the charge pipe by going with plastic. While there is a rubber isolator bracket, the bracket is in the center of the pipe and the force concentration of the connection to the engine is the weak spot. When travelling on the highway, suddenly the car got quite louder and started surging and skipping. The CEL was on about a block from my house and when I got home, I tried reading the codes but got a vague code that wasn't a standard "P-" code. I started driving to the dealership the next day when a "reduced engine power" warning showed on the infoscreen and I pondered calling AAA. Cruising at highway speeds were not much of an issue, but any change in throttle and RPM started to make it jump and feel like skipping gears. The dealer told me that the charge pipe was broken and that it would be about $550 for a new one. I found an aluminum one from a performance aftermarket supplier online for $150.
