Engine/engine cooling. Had to replace water pump & alternator. Thought engine #N63 had been corrected but now I find out N63 was not corrected and it is causing smoke from the tail pipes from worn valve stem seals. This means I am burning the engine oil inside the combustion chamber. The valve stems are a non-metal component on top of the engine that gets subjected to huge doses of turbo heat. Eventually they start to leak causing my high end BMW to smoke like a freight train.
The oil consumption defect is a safety concern because it prevents the engine from maintaining the proper level of engine oil and causes voluminous oil consumption that cannot be reasonably anticipated or predicted. The oil consumption defect is consequential to class members, burdening them with out-of-pocket expenses that should not be occurring. I had to add so much oil to my car between changes that I had to carry a quart around with me at all times. Consumer Reports published a study on excessive oil consumption which examined nearly 500,000 vehicles and the N-63 equipped BMW 5 series was the worst performer. There was a lawsuit covering vehicles equipped with the original N63 engine. This lawsuit may be closed but I intend to do whatever is necessary to get my car included in the lawsuit.
