The problem started Oct. 2013, the screen was switching on and off. BMW dealer told me that the computer was gone and to replace it (more than $2000). I insist that it must have been something to do with the wiring. They charged me $80 and said there was nothing wrong with the connections. Winter came, no more rain and the computer worked all winter. No replacement was made.
May 2014, again computer on and off . I went to a garage specializing in German vehicles. They found water in the trunk under the spare wheel where 3 modules were located TPM, radio and another sensor. They were wet . The trimming of the truck was not set properly and they suspected the rain water to have leaked through there. They dried the truck and the modules. Everything was working again but the TPM had to be replaced. They told me to wait for more rain in order to check again.
July 2014, after a strong rain, the car stopped completely in the middle of the road. Complete failure of the electric system. Impossible to roll down the windows, or to move to drive. Everything was dead. I was towed to the same garage and they found the the water was not going through the trunk but through the drain of the sunroof. There was 2 inches of water under the spare wheel where the module are located and the water infiltrated also the roof on the back seats. They had to remove all the.material on the inside of the roof to dry it and clean the drainage of the roof in order to remove any dust. They dried also the trunk and the 3 modules under the wheel and remove the corrosion . The TPM was already gone.
I could drive the car again and the computer was working.
Oct. 2014, computer is not working again. They said that the module are too ruined by the water leaks. They could order the modules from BMW but I would have to go see the incompetents at BMW to reset the modules.
Hate them.
By the way, my car only has 34000 km.
Update from Sep 28, 2015: Correction: Not "truck" but "trunk"
