I did not expect to have an engine failure at 61,000 miles on this BMW 528i, the ultimate driving machine. I’m expecting the repair cost would be astronomical knowing that the timing chain has completely failed. The car just suddenly shut down in the middle of the highway with no warnings whatsoever. It would have been catastrophic if the highway was not traffic free at the time. Fortunately it was a very busy hour on the highway, otherwise it could have caused a deadly accident. Never I expected that a luxury car like BMW would have such a major issue like this prematurely. I have towed the car to the dealership (Crevier BMW) in Santa Ana, California. Don’t know yet how much, or if is it covered?. Reading all the testimonials, I’m afraid of how much will it cost me. Any advise from anyone on what route I should go? I will also try to contact the BMW corporate in New Jersey.
Just like most of the horrifying stories i've just read, mind is similar. Driving around 65MPH, a powertrain light popped up on the dashboard. A couple minutes later, the car completely stopped. I couldn't even put it in neutral ...
I had the car towed to Westmont, Illinois BMW, and was told by BMW mechanics that I had an oil leak. They also mentioned findings of metal shaving in my oil pan - I had just gotten the oil changed two day prior. Long story short, BMW charged me $190 for a diagnosis but couldn't pinpoint exactly what was wrong with the car. In order for them to find the exact problem it would cost much more money... The weird thing is they didn't hesitate to recommend a new engine that would cost me over 9000 to have them put it in. Well, how can you know I need a new engine if you can't tell me exactly whats going on with the car? Very weird.
I had a warning light drive train malfunction on and off. It happened for a few minutes then would go off. I have it checked. garage ran the diagnostics and nothing showed up. There was no change in performance, no noise, etc. Several weeks later, same light went on, followed by low oil pressure, then car shut off. Had it evaluated, said needed a new engine. Subsequently repair shop said this is the third engine they have replaced on a 2013 BMW in the past month.
Dealer denied that engine had issue, but found many others with same issue. I replaced with a new factory engine. Also need rebuilt turbo and new air conditioning unit. Do not know if related issue. It appears BMW and the Dealers are not taking responsibility. Very frustrating.
