Ok so everyone must be aware of the oil leaking issues with all BMW engines from this time period (1999-2005)
The valve cover gasket dries up and leaks oil all over the engine bay. You need to replace that every 100k miles or so. Also the oil filter housing gasket (a bit harder job) is known to leak and you need get that checked out and replaced as well. Not terribly expensive to fix but worth noting.
Another thing worth mentioning is the engine's crankcase ventilation valve... or CCV or CVV as we say on the BMW forums. The job costs about $500-$550. The CCV can either get clogged in colder climates, or the hoses attached to the CCV crack and end up having a vacuum leak which affects engine performance. You will need to get the whole system replaced for about $550
