First the Facts: oil burning smell with oil drops under car. When starting car in the morning is when the smell is the strongest. BMW said: valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket are leaking. Thanks to this site you can see this is a common issue with this car, but mostly commented on for 2008 year, but I'm here to tell you it is also a issue with the 2009. I read elsewhere that if you ignore this for to long the $700 repair will turn into more than $3K if the oil gets into the electronics or ignition system.

Update from Feb 21, 2018: New valve cover gasket started leaking again after 1 year, so it lasted 6,000 miles of driving. To our surprise BMW was willing to replace the gasket (again) for free, but come on!
