I took my Audi Q5 to a mountain of approximately 2300 meters high in October 2013 with a mileage of a bit more than 30,000 kilometer. When I reached the mountain top, as I stop the car, gear was on D1, I heard a metal-colliding sound from under the shifter and the hitting sound(gear was not "biting"correctly) kept coming and only stopped when I shifted to N. When I tried to back the car, Q5 "dragged" a short distance at a time. At that moment I thought the transmission must have busted.
Fortunately, Q5 let me drive to the cabin, 15 meters away. After one night's cooling, unbelievably, Q5 became "normal" again, like nothing had happened. The problem surfaced every time I had to drive-and-stop in a traffic congestion for more than 20 minutes. Audi service people in Taiwan could not locate the problem. Or they do not want to solve the problem because it costs a fortune to replace the transmission, and they might sensed it would finally end up in court.
On October 7th, I took my Q5 to the same mountain again, and, this time, my Q5 lost "R" gear "temporarily" when I tried to parked the car beside a cabin. And, again, after a night's cooling and rest, my Q5 became "normal" again. And much to my surprise, the engine ran smoothly, even "silkily", for more than 200 kilometer on my way home.
One thing for sure, I will never, and will not suggest anyone I know, buy an Audi again.
