While backing out our Audi from the garage, the vehicle got stuck on a pile of snow and ice. We tried to move the car forward, and in the process, revved up the engine. However, the car failed to move and in less than 20 seconds, we heard a loud explosion and saw a lot of smoke with a strong burning smell. There was a massive shrapnel spray that was shot into the garage and included shredded pieces of the front passenger side headlight, bumper, internal car components, wiring and tire. We attempted to stop the car engine, but it kept restarting. The city fire department responded immediately after our call and the fire crew forcibly popped the hood open to disconnect the battery cable, preventing the engine from restarting and causing a fire that could have been catastrophic.
Our insurance company totaled the car since just the initial repair cost was well over $25,000. Audi customer service washed their hands off since we accepted settlement from the insurance company.
Would like to hear if someone else has had a similar experience with a freely spinning tire. Our suspicion is that the front passenger tire ended up spinning at over 150 miles per hour due faulty transmission/speed controls. The tires were Michelin tires with less than 10,000 miles on them.
